Here is the list of common problems observed in young children where early treatment is often necessary:
Excessive spacing of the teeth may or may not be an indication for the need of early orthodontic treatment. Spacing can indicate permanently missing teeth, misshaped teeth or excessive jaw growth.
Crowding at a young age can mean difficulty with keeping the teeth clean and also the potential that future permanent teeth may have to be removed.
Open Bite can be an indication of possible thumb or tongue habit. It might also mean the direction the upper and lower jaws are growing is in an unfavorable direction.
Overbite may mean that the lower teeth are biting into the roof of the mouth, damaging the gum tissue behind the top teeth. Typically, this also indicates a facial imbalance.
Crossbite of front teeth can cause gingival recession of the lower front teeth, while also preventing adequate growth of the upper jaw.
Crossbite of back teeth can cause a facial asymmetry and a crooked smile. It may also be an indication of a narrow upper jaw and/or crowded upper teeth.
Underbite can be an indication of an upper jaw underdevelopment or a lower jaw that has grown too much. Both situations need to be addressed as soon as possible.
Overjet that is excessive can lead to a greater possibility of chipped, fractured or lost teeth due to traumatic injuries.
Abnormal eruption of the teeth may or may not be an indication for the need of early orthodontic treatment.
