Homemade Elderberry Syrup
I use this recipe to help strengthen my family’s immunity and help fight cold/flu. Especially during fall and winter seasons. Swipe to read benefits- there are SO many! It’s hard to find and expensive to buy so I we make it at home. I use my mom’s recipe and it’s the absolute best. You can buy dried organic elderberries on Amazon. I get mine for $40 a pound and it makes about 4 batches which last a few months.
Serving size is 1 teaspoon for children and 1 tablespoon for adults. If you’re sick, take it 2-3 times per day until you feel better. Sometimes I’m feeling better within a day, especially when taken at the onset of a cold.
1 cup dried organic elderberries
4 cups filtered water
3 small cinnamon sticks (or 1 large)
1 teaspoon whole cloves
2 inches Fresh chopped ginger root
1/2 cup-1 cup honey (taste to your liking)
Mix everything together in a pot except for honey. Bring to a boil. Turn down to simmer for 30-40 minutes. Let it cool. Strain out berries etc. into a bowl, let it cool until warm and stir in honey. Bottle and keep refrigerated. Stay healthy friends ❤️

I love that it’s getting so much more attention now a days. You can buy this at health food stores but it’s very pricey, much cheaper to make it yourself. The best would be with fresh elderberries, which are native to the Pacific Northwest so if anyone knows where to get them locally during harvest time, let me know!! Otherwise, dehydrated elderberries work great. I use the @wellnessmama
recipe, and then add a few tweaks of my own. -2/3 cup dried black elderberries, or 1 1/3 cups fresh or frozen
-3½ cups filtered water
-2 TBSP fresh or dried ginger root (I always add more, keep your finger in the freezer so you always have some!)
-1 tsp cinnamon powder (I use a few cinnamon sticks)
-½ tsp cloves or clove powder
—> bring to a boil, cover and simmer for 45 minutes or until mixture has reduced by half
Mash berries to get the maximum benefit, strain and let cool. Then add raw honey, Wellnessmama recipe is 1 cup but I just add 1/2 cup.
I also add a juiced lemon or two. Now you’ve made your own elderberry syrup 😄
When I make gummies from this syrup I add vitamin d drops to each gummy.

6 pieces astragalus root⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1 piece kombu⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1 large onion (skin and all)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1 bunch parsley⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1 gallon distilled water.*⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
*Important to use distilled water, not tap or filtered or bottled water, in order to get the full benefit of the high potassium in the broth.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1. Add herbs together with water and bring to boil.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2. Lower heat and simmer for 2 hours.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
4. Add minced garlic and/or tamari to taste. The broth really needs either salt or tamari, and tamari wakes it up nicely. For all the benefits in the broth, we use tamari as needed until it tastes good, and don’t worry about the amount of salt. Test to find out how much you want to add.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Years and years ago, I used to buy this tincture from an herbal medicine doctor in California. It was called Super Tonic. I got sick of paying for it, especially because it came in a little 2 oz. dropper bottle. I felt like I couldn’t take as much as I wanted or I’d be broke. I knew what was in it but of course no clue how it was actually made. I decided to make it for myself anyway. So for a few years I made it with what was in the Super Tonic. Raw ACV, horseradish root, white onions, ginger root, garlic cloves and habanero peppers. I used equal amounts of everything (less habaneros) and infused it in the vinegar for several months. The longer I did it the more powerful it seemed. It was definitely an immune boosting tonic. Each of those veggies has a powerful affect on your immune system as does the raw vinegar. Cold and flu season is approaching, and every year the whole “Should you get the flu shot?” question brings up quite the heated debate. Heck, you’d think we were talking about Politics! While getting the flu shot is a personal choice you must make for your health (yes, you do have a say), I feel there are many things you can do to naturally keep your immune system healthy without getting vaccinated. And while I typically decline the flu shot, this year I chose to bite the bullet since I have a newborn at home, and by getting vaccinated you can pass on antibodies through your breastmilk to help protect little ones.
