#JackedKirby - The Demon Kicking Some Tail....
Kirby books are known for their dynamism and action packed panels, so that should never surprise anyone... but when he finds a way to work an intense physical fight into the pages of one of his more horror themed titles I immediately take notice. Such is the case with #Issue5 of The Demon, published in January of 1973!
In this issue Etrigan and Merlin are captured by the evil witch Ugly Meg and her flunkie The Iron Duke... who immediately restrain them and changes Etrigan back toJason Blood. As they are held captive, Blood desperately tries to turn back into his demonic form... and once he does, he immediately goes after the Iron Duke with all the vengeance one would expect from a yellow demon of hell!!!
Kirby does a great job with the opening half splash page to the fight, with Etrigan utilizing a clothesline to take the Iron Duke off his feet!!! (Pic 1). I isolated the half splash double sized panel in Pic 2 to get a better look at the Iron Duke losing his balance and being thrown backward.... Etrigan looks like Bret Hart throwing that flying lariat!!! Pic 3 utilizes a more traditional 6 panel layout loaded with a ton of signature Kirby action shots and sound effects... it’s not a Kirby fight without some death defying flying kick and a FZOM or PROMMFF echoing the sounds of the fight!!! Even in this horror themed book Kirby gets his action packed fight on!!!! 💥💥💥
