Now that cold weather is on its way, I'm replacing my sad, dead annuals with some pretty pansies for the rest of the season 🍁 It's a bit of a gamble, but if these beuties survive the winter I'll have gorgeous blooms next spring when everything else is just emerging from their long winters nap 😊 #gardenfriday #gardening #flowerfriday #greenthumb #howdoesyourgardengrow #frontporchflowers #fallblooms #fallflowers #pansies
Hydroponics are cool. Stephanie Acasay, greenhouse manager, places a kale plant in a hydroponic channel at Snuck Farm on Thursday, Oct. 18, 2018, in Pleasant Grove. #hydroponics #howdoesyourgardengrow #photojournalism #photooftheday

I've been traveling for the past few weeks and I accidentally happened upon a shop that I follow here on Instagram while in Louisville! @forageplants was lovely and Summer was great to us! Ranunculus are some of my favorite flowers and they were giving some away for free. Totally made my day! I definitely would recommend checking out their lovely plants if you're ever in the area 🌸💕

Meet my latest victim *ahem* I mean addition 😅😂 This little beauty is a tricoloured sage! Can you see the beautiful blush starting to show on some of those edges? Swoon!! I had no idea that there were flowering and variegated varieties 😃 Learning so much already. - Found it at the sweetest little volunteer run community nursery today @peppertreeplace who also gave me some great advice on how to deal with those ants and aphids as well as some great potting tips 👍 I can’t believe they’re in danger of being closed down (and when I’ve only just discovered them😥😭) Give them your support on Facebook @ save Peppertree place to help keep their wonderful work going.
Serving some “Just mulched realness”. We’ve got 8 old faithful blackjack zucchinis in this year so we are hoping for a big zucchy year!
🍁Last weeks garden visit. We have a row each of beets, spinach and kale, with lots of wild onion grass, and purslane giving us an extra treat😊. 🍁 #FallGarden #HowDoesYourGardenGrow #ElementsNatureProgram #KidsInTheGarden
Mandarine and orange splitzer tree is growing quickly now it’s warming up! And the celery is going to seed. Does the celery plant keep growing after it’s seeded? I think I’ll save some seeds for the local library seed collection:) wish the sun would come back out. All the photos look alittle dark haha 😂 I grew that celery from seed and have been harvesting what I need as we needed. Has been fantastic. I got the seeds from @thediggersclub. They germinated well!:)

Veggie patch needs working this weekend but loving it still @greenlifeau. Herbs need planting out from bag so the bag has space for the rest to grow. Will do that this weekend. Highly recommend this bag if you have a small space it’s from @burgonandball and no this is not a sponsor post. And @flemingsnurseries I have two ballerina apple trees which are growing with opposites symptoms hahaa . Ones giving me a few apples and lacking as many leaves. Another is giving me none and lots of leaves. Got them This winter. So confused as to what’s going on with them. I need to also plant my seedlings out this weekend as they need more space to grow. So I’ll be a busy bee 🐝 this weekend I think as I’ve been alittle garden lazy lately bahaha. 🤗🌿🌱🙌🤓👌bring on the weekend!!
Last question guys! Tay berry is coming back to life :) but the old leaves look pretty eek. So do I cut the old leaves or leave them? Thanks in advance for advice!:)
This is what is left of my sweetpeas. I hacked them back. They got soooo tall. I think they had a good run. But I need to make space for other items now. What should I plant here next? I have currently two marigold edible orange flowers - And freesias are almost done blooming. Was thinking dill bouquet which I have a seedling needing more space or something to go with the flowers and the snow peas and beans or should I trellis tomatoes here ? Ideas please:) the raised bed is a long narrow size pretty good for growing things. Get shaded to full sun. Help!:) @greenlifeau
Here’s a question: do you thin out your nectarines trees crop if it’s your first year you have had it but it fruited the prior year (nursery said said it did)? I have a lot of fruit on my tree. It looks healthy. But some little leaves fall of it every now and then so is that normal or what? It’s a pixie trixie nectarine tree from Flemmings:) feedback peeps👍🌱🤓🤗🙃
Last tomatoes of the year. Until we meet again...
Sweet Corn is growing 🌽🌽🌽 my first time trying it!!
Cloudy today. I think it will rain but it’s warm. So I checked on my balcony planters and so far I have been more successful than last year with strawberries! I have flowers woohoo and actually quite a few:) celery has gone bonkers and my ranunculus bulbs are almost done I think. Thought I would get more from the balcony ones but they aren’t as productive as the ones in the back garden but overall great success🤗👍🙌🤓🌿🌱👌
Those long tree shadows and that golden fall light get me every time. Sunday is calling for temps in the 30s so it might be time for a bonfire and cider! 🔥 I feel like I’ve been living in limbo. And, it lowers my overall energy and ability to be fully present. In trying to figure out what I should do about it, I realized I’ve let go of some of my self-care staples- meditation and practicing gratitude affirmations. This lack of reflection just magnifies my feelings of stagnation. Well, guess what?! ✨Time to reconnect✨It’s so easy to slip, but we can always start again. Tell me what some of your self-care staples are?
We harvested 3.3 lbs of sweet potatoes! 🍠 This was our second season growing them and it was much more successful. Last year we got three scrawny little tubers. This year we tried three varieties. One we bought as seed that works in our area, one we found in the pantry and a purple one purchased from the grocery store. I am pretty pleased with the outcome. We will save these for next years slips. We don’t really understand how to cure them. We have no way to get them to 90 degrees and 85% humidity. We can only hope near the wood stove works. 🤞 Maggie the guardian thought it was really fun to snatch them up and run off. Not my idea of fun but it is great to see her get more comfortable here and playful. The joy of a giant white fluffy dog galloping around in the leaves with her sweet potato prize.
💫A Sea Hibiscus with the most delicious variegation powers!💚💟🖤 • • • I’m so proud of my little #mahoe , it’s grown like mad since I first brought it in April— I consider it a lucky find when I spotted the 5-leafed seedling in @fairchildgarden plant festival during my birthday plant spree this year. I’d truly love to see the yellow flowers on it someday, but then again, these leaves beautiful & richly melted patterns speak volumes of magical dreams & fantasies all on their own🌙🌿✨ • • • #variegatahaveit #variegated #variegatedplants #hibiscus #seahibiscus #mahoetree #mygardentoday #houseplants #howdoesyourgardengrow #plantsmakepeoplehappy #plantsofinstagram #tendermomentswithplants #lifearoundplants #plantlife #greenyourfeed #tropicalplants #plantcollection #therealhouseplantsofinstagram #plantenabler #idrinkandigrowthings #houseplants #foliage #foliageplant #myplantlovinghome #myplant #plantnerd #planthoarder #plantmom #planttherapy #houseplants
Ollie June had bunches of blooms, but failed to keep the fruit before we figured out she preferred to be outside in the summer. This year, she has two olives. In the last few days, we noticed one turned purple! We didn’t even know olives could have such a rich aubergine shade. 🔮
Good afternoon!☀️ If you had a seal, what would yours look like? Mine would be the silhouette of pine tree with Mt. Rainier in the background. . . . This beautiful pin was designed and created by the Alchemy queen, Natalie. It is truly stunning, and if I let my imagination soar a little, I can pretend I got it on a trip to Os Alta, at a fabrikator gift shop. Wouldn’t that be amazing? If you want one for yourself, there’s still some available at Natalie’s shop. Head on over to @alchemyandink for the link. We planted this multi-stem birch tree in a project in Cardiff a couple of years ago and the bark is so striking, especially amongst the woodland style under storey planting and against the slatted screen.

Our olives are ripening nicely. Looks like a good crop this year. Do you grow any fruit or veg in your garden?
Aunt Bee is happily watching over the new Fall greens bed. We had no power right after I transplanted these guys which meant no water. Oof. I don't wanna make this post, but I gotta make this post, but I hate that I have to, but watch me anyway. #Winnipeg . #Manitoba . You disappoint me. Foragers: you have especially disappointed me. It has been announced that Prairie Sage (there are two kinds here- Artemisia ludoviciana and frigida) was overharvested in Birds Hill Park and surrounding areas. Areas that have been safely and sustainably harvested by the First People of Manitoba for centuries. Overharvesting means you will see a population in decline (kind of like how colonization overharvested actual First Nations people, bison, etc.?) Schoolrooms don't have enough. The only people who actually can burn sage in a sacred way (unless you are First Nations, it is your hobby, not your tradition) are sounding the alarm. And I just scrolled through the gallery of a lovely, hip, new business who sells it in their products and shows that they forage their ingredients from the wild "sustainably", which I mean... Guys. I am sorry. But there was *never* enough for hip, white, privileged folks to have some. There is just not enough nature left. There is especially not enough for *businesses* who profit. Just yesterday I saw a #florist with enough smokebush to fill a cargo van she cut from the wild, even tho you can buy shrubs to plant. I saw another #flowerfarmer who forgot her shears, so she violently tore large limbs off the trees. Local forager, biologist Laura Reeves is a very good friend of mine. It is not like I don't understand foraging. It is that there is not enough nature left. Google what is happening to the wild areas surrounding Seattle and Portland from foraging. Every footstep alters the ecosystem. #GrowYourOwn . There is *absolutely no excuse* to be taking more from the wild or the First Nations. It costs five dollars for a native sage plant. If you will grow yours out and share cuttings, or will guerilla plant one in Winnipeg, I will gift you one. Share yours. Or buy from @prairieoriginals or @prairieflora. (Click on the #foraging tag to get an idea of how many people are harvesting from the wild *right now*)
We purchased some really beautiful cox comb at the farmer’s market recently. When we did, the farmer told us that we could dry it out and save the seeds. She told us we could even use paint and print with the dried out flowers. Alta was immediately excited by the idea of saving seeds and planting this in next year’s flower bed. I was laughing at myself because despite my good intentions, I never accomplish projects like these. • This is where #homeschooling wins. I was so set on adding this into to a couple mornings of school that I saw it through. Once the flowers started looking less than fresh in their vase, we dried them out on paper. Then we began collecting seeds as we found them dropping. Eventually the girls and I worked through all of it and got as many seeds as we could. They’re in a little jar, waiting to be packaged up for next year. • I’m feeling a bit proud of this simple project, and if we can get these to actually grow I know the girls will be too. • I’m learning to seize opportunities for education everywhere. It never ceases to thrill me when things naturally present themselves to us and we dig in and learn more. I have a feeling gardening is going to play an even bigger role in our studies this spring and moving forward. Building on what already gets them excited. 🌱🌱🌱 . . . . . #coxcomb #naturestudy #flowerstudy #seedsaving #letthemlearn #thisishomeschooling #charlottemasonliving #wildandfreechildren #kidswhogarden #homeschoolgarden #natureschooling #howdoesyourgardengrow #supportyourlocalflowerfarmer #farmersmarketflowers #raisingwilds #secularhomeschooler #wildandfreefamily #seedsavers #flowergarden #redridgefarms #flavormarket

“ As gardeners-without-borders we must ask ourselves bigger questions like: Where did these materials arise and at what cost to the place that begot them? Of course the synthetic fertilizer loses on every score; it's not even in the running. It gives us no answers; it ignores the questions...” Indeed dear Will, it most certainly does ignore the root of the problem. It’s like noticing that there is smoke in your house and instead of looking for fire, you just open a window. This book is as good as any mind altering drug... imho ...it takes you deep friends... deep within the matrix so to speak. The matrix of what is wrong with “modern”, contemporary agriculture and from such a wise, well rounded and profound scientific perspective... it’s a wonder that this isn’t a textbook in more colleges. Today’s #gettoknowahomesteader challenge was to share a quote from your favorite book... and while I would have loved to give you some pithy crust from some novel that I just don’t (..want to...) have the time for, truth is I read textbooks and informative pieces like this for relaxation... solid information surrounding my passions is my groove. . . . @growingjubilance @moderndaysoldways @mitzacreekfarm @atablefullinthewoods @lostandfarmed . . . #willbonsall #radicalselfsufficiency #radicallife #homesteading #agrarian #farmlife #modernfarm #permies #permaculture #homesteader #homestead #howdoesyourgardengrow #beautifulgarden #love #goodread

There were a few sweet spots in my day. This tomato shaping out to heart, for ME, was one of them. It seems the hearts just pop all over lately. I really love setting up to record, create and explore. I like making things pretty. Fall makes things pretty too. After she shocks this shit out of them. But even the cold does, eventually, grow more comfortable. I will take today as my #firstfrost Thankfully, unlike my garden, I can grab a blanket! No more shocking this garden, #msfallifyounasty ! H O Y A B I L O B A T A There was never a Hoya I didn’t love. This variety, aside from producing some of the tiniest famously geometric blooms in all of Hoya Land, is also my least fussy, most prolific bloomer, pinkest, and the most adorable of all 🌿☺️ If you are collecting or happen across one— don’t let it go! • • • I recorded these videos over 2 days, the lighter footage is of many unopened blooms, and the darker are 🌸🌸🌸 • • • Watch the sun filter through the cascading vines and the shadow/light play create a soothing effect against a light breeze. He probably doesn’t know it, but his garden means so much to me... though when he built it, I didn’t even know him yet. But every single time I look out and see it, I’m not only struck by its beauty - I’m taken aback by its remarkable symbolism, because it’s a perfect physical representation of his dedication to his daughter, his determination to do things for himself, the ways in which he nurtures his self-discipline, and his ability to provide for others. It also reminds me of the advice I gave myself when my marriage was ending: When you have to start your life over, build a sanctuary. Somewhere you can go to step away and breathe; something positive that brings you joy; something you can care for or tend to; something that benefits others; something that makes you better. You have no idea how much that sanctuary will keep you grounded (pun equally intended and not intended) and how much gratitude it can bring. They say #gardening is therapy... I don’t like gardening; I used to disagree. My mind has been changed. I’ve seen it firsthand. Gardens are magical.
