This photo is from a couple weeks ago. Only 2 weeks into my prep and already missing the blown out offseason pumps. I always stress eat, eat, eat. Eat like a barbarian and don’t be scared to get a little fluff on your body. Not only because it sounds cool to say you weigh 250lbs.. Ok I’ll tell it to you like this. I weighed up to 308lbs this offseason. Yes it sucked, I couldn’t walk up a flight of stairs without breathing heavy. Couldn’t put my socks on normally, had to SIT DOWN to put my pants on lol. BUT. And it’s a big but. The one hour a day in the gym when I got to use all that food was absolutely awesome. Some people talk about pump but I don’t think they’ve experienced a true pump. Getting a pump when you’re intermittent fasting is one thing. Getting a pump when you’re smashing 6000 calories a day is something totally different.. 🔻 Just eat. #hosstile #hoss #sacrificewithoutregret #kagedmuscle #realwork #dyingbreed

Decided to finish my leg workout with some CrossFit. 😬 Just messin around, this is my variation for lunges. Reason; knees were slightly sore so instead of traditional lunges aggravating things more, I did these. It was a great finisher. Able to get deep and really burn out the entire leg. One of the biggest mistakes I've made in the past was to lighten up on the weight as I've come closer to a show. Lifting as heavy as possible will help retain as much muscle as possible while being in a calorie deficit. Ok back is officially the best day of the week! I stopped Barbell rowing for a long time after an injury but since I started rowing again, back is the day! I still don’t go heavy but I make sure I get lots of volume in to make up for it. I was never a fan of traditional good mornings with a barbell. This variation always felt a little better to me because I can focus on the hamstring contraction and not having to balance the weight with my low back. We all have a muscle that we just can’t seem to build the way we’d like. Hamstrings have always been stubborn one for me. Regardless never give up on a lagging muscle just keep trying new ideas until that light bulb goes off. **note: for those that are worried about their neck, the rack is resting on my shoulders. It's not that things aren't meant to be it's more of the other person making the wrong decisions to ruin the connection such as talking crap behind your back or something. You don't have to force anyone to be in your life. They're grown ass young adults who should know how to act. They'll act like it if they want to be in your life. Trying to make them understand is impossible but sadly if they don't want to listen they're not part of your plan. It's not your loss. Their actions towards you are totally up to them. You can't control what they do but you can certainly control what you do. FOCUS, even if it hurts man. In relation to my last post this is what I have found for my own hamstrings. Doing more compound movements for hamstrings has resulted in more growth. I used to think the burn from lying leg curls was what it took. I would do 8 sets on a lying leg curl before moving to the seated leg curl. That is not the same burn you get from a compound movement like deadlifts or squats. Now, I’ll do 2-3 variations of a stiff leg deadlift or some type of wide leg squat/leg press with feet in front to target the hams. I’ve also added regular deadlifts some days to my hamstring routine. What’s the best way to build hamstrings? I’ve heard some say their hams exploded with growth by doing heavy low volume type workouts. Had a good conversation with @thejunglegym Mike Coyle about my training last week. Mike is the one who got me started in the game so I respect what he has to say. I asked him about trying to create more roundness to my legs. He said “are you lunging?” That was all he had to say. I wasn’t lunging and today I am. It’s a very valuable exercise that I do in spurts but never consistently. That will change for this prep. This pullover machine has been a staple in my back development for years. Some gyms have it and I never see it being used. The way it’s set up doesn’t really feel comfortable and doesn’t target the lats properly. So this is my variation. Just reverse your grip and grab the safety bar as a handle. Immediately turns it into the old school nautilus that Yates used in blood n guts. #tbt to when I tore my lat tbar rowing 8 plates. My favourite back movement became my nemesis in an instant. I was 6 weeks out from the Toronto Pro if I remember. I wasn’t in the best shape, holding water and still some fat. I took a couple weeks to throw myself a pity party before I put my big boy pants on and got back to work! I was in the centre call out for a little while but I think I kept fading and ended up in third. I was just not conditioned enough. My first major tear and it really effected me mentally. I grew from it and have learned to stay strong in the face of adversity. 🔥 Bad shit happens but good can come from it. It’s all how you choose to look at it when all is said and done. One thing it definitely taught me was, just keep working. Bad shit seems bigger than it really is in the moment. In that moment I felt my career was over and I was devastated. There was a time when trying to create something perfect was applauded. It’s gotten to the point now where if you’re trying to be perfect you’re looked at negatively. Like you’re trying to be better than everyone else and that’s a terrible thing. You have to conform. You have to look and act like everyone else so you don’t make anyone feel inferior or uncomfortable about themselves or their life. If someone practices a specific sport all day, they’re considered obsessed. If someone studies all day, they have no life, they are a nerd. If someone works all day they’re considered a workaholic and need time off. If someone trains for years to build a huge or perfect physique, they’re an ego maniac. This way of thinking is bullshit. People work to be great. Why as a society are we trying to slow them down and make everyone mediocre? 🔥 Don’t hold yourself back because society says it’s ‘too much’. Another beauty from yesterday’s back session. This quickly has become my favourite pulldown variation. It targets the lower lats better than any other pulldown for me. Back is seriously challenging quad day for my favourite day of the week! I was feeling a little tired, started with some machine pullovers and pulldowns. By the time I got to barbell rows I was WIDE awake! I hate feeling tired when I get to the gym but I can always count on the iron to wake me up! That’s why when I’m feeling sluggish I go anyway cuz I know that feeling will wear off quick. I know a lot of you have a hard time getting to the gym cuz you work long hours or have families. Left - hands even or Right - hands clasped? The off-season was pretty good for me. I was able to hold my weight around 295-300 for the a few months. It was hard, I hate eating that much food everyday. I hate not fitting into any of my clothes. I hate being bloated all the time and out of shape. Confidence is lower, productivity is lower, everything suffers except for the one thing I’m shooting for; more muscle. My workouts have been great, pumps amazing and that 1hr a day at the gym makes the rest of the shittiness worth it. Some people will disagree with me about getting this heavy or fat but it’s worked for me year after year since the start. Eat big, stay big, at the end of it all, 5-10lbs of stage weight each year has been the result. We’ll see if this off-season will result in a bigger, denser package on stage. Today was day one. Ok I’ve been eating like 5-6000 calories a day for a few months, it’s been productive but I think it’s time to shred down. I’m considering doing the California Pro if I can stay injury free and healthy. That will give me ample time (I think 16 weeks) to shred down nice and slow. I ate like a horse for months, I used my time wisely. So many of you young/new lifters are scared to eat. “Oh know what will my friends think?”, “What will people think on IG?” If you have a goal of putting on a lot of mass, none of that shit matters. You have to EAT! You have to eat so much it’s uncomfortable. No, don’t get fat. Don’t eat complete shit all the time. This mornings debate on my last post stirred up even more debate than I thought. I guess there really is no right answer to the question. More so whatever feels best to you. My thoughts were more in terms of off-season since when dieting none of this applies you just do what your coach says. In the off-season I usually like to have a rest day before legs and I usually try to overload calories on that rest day. Lots of clean cals and usually one cheat meal but nothing too sloppy I just wanna boost cals. My preworkout meal is usually small and I’ll eat it 90-120min before training legs giving myself lots of time to digest. Post legs I can barely eat so usually a @kagedmusclesupps Whey shake and then about 90min after that I can start to process food. I’m back to my normal meals after the workout. Nothing crazy but if I’m really hungry from training hard I may go for a burger. Do you think it’s more important to load up on lots of good clean cals (and maybe some shitty ones) the day before leg day or after the leg workout for recovery? Banded Hex Press for a chest finisher today with a drop set. Hex press by itself has always been a crazy burn for me. Adding the bands just elevated the burn another notch! Be prepared to put in the time and work if you don’t have genetics for a great back. When I started my back was the slowest to develop. I remember hitting it twice a week for the longest time. Then there was the rowing workouts. Very little pull downs for months on end, just rowing every week till I could see something. Back is a complex group of muscles that take more effort because it’s all about the mind muscle connection. You can’t see your back working so a lot of visualization goes into back training. My advice to anyone with a lagging back. Learn the physiology of the back. The different muscle groups and what their function is. I have come to really like the way cables feel when hitting triceps. I always used to think, Heavy and Free weight only. I don’t really think it translates on arm day. I have come to a point where I think higher reps and moderate weight works best for arms. It comes down to feel. When you’re doing an arm exercise, can you feel the burn or are you just getting joint pain? Cables seem to pump my triceps up the fastest/biggest. #tbt to the 2008 Houston Pro. This was a two day roller coaster. Imagine this; Friday prejudge round 1 (picture shown) nailed my condition and fullness 100%, felt huge on stage. Friday prejudge round 2, spilled over, looked like I didn’t even diet for the show. I had to wait about 20min between rd 1 & 2. I think sitting around hurt me in some way. This was my second year competing as a pro and wanted to qualify for the O. I left prejudging almost in tears. (Actually think I cried later on) Gathered myself and regrouped for the Saturday finals. Showed up on Saturday better than I ever had before. I did cardio and manipulated water Friday night and got my tan resprayed. I ended up in the top six which was still disappointing for me but I was out of the top ten after prejudge. It felt good to fight my way back after crying like a baby. Quad day and I haven’t done any squats in over a month. Felt good to get back under the bar even tho it wasn’t heavy. Lighter weight doesn’t always have to be easy though. For this exercise we kept rest period shorter than normal. I also used Pause Reps for the last two sets. Sets of ten with a 1-2 second pause at the bottom.
