Let's talk about baby goats. I don't think that I can clearly describe what this means to us. When a very wonderful and kind Marla Au drove off with our goats in 2016, after we felt that our old land could no longer sustain them due to complications from the chemical spill, we were unsure if we would ever see them again, and very heartbroken. Hearing the bleats from these babies of OUR baby Star, back with us again is such a beautiful, wonderful blessing. Grace. A gift. Of course the birth could have been better timed, and I forgot how to prepare for this day and there was running back and forth to the store, how to get the girls to dance but make the timed feedings for little miss Lucy, and how to clean up the house at the same time after having been sick on the couch for three days. Oh, and add in an unexpected baby duck that we didn't have the right food for. Through all of the craziness today, it just felt like another piece of our world finally came right again. There were deep tears of joy, relief and thankfulness. Laughter, peeping and bahhing. And huge gratefulness for our village, with whom I just could not have managed this day that we have waited so so long for. This is "My Dancing Lucy" in honor of my big's passion and Lucy Pevensie

Lisa Was Right. For the first time ever probably. After 18 months of wrangling 150metres of electronetting every weekend we are free. No More Electronetting. Ever. Well. Maybe not ever but we have the sheep in a permanent sheep mesh fence. It feels so good- even though I'm a bit wrecked. I need another few star pickets and I need to clout the mesh along some of the boundary wooden posts but it is safe enough for now. Pheeeeew. I actually told Lisa the netting was only for the first couple of weeks. Maybe a few months until I got it together. But here we are 18 months later. I wonder what else she's been right about?

Another Winter Weather Advisory has been put into effect until 8am tomorrow morning. Thankfully tomorrow is Saturday, which means we don’t have to conquer a steep, deep, slippery driveway on our way to meet the school bus, an early dental appointment or some other such frustrating nonsense.
No, tomorrow morning promises to be a slow, cup after peaceful cup of hot french-pressed coffee kind of morning. With snow falling gently outside steamy cabin windows while the cute, smiling baby quietly plays with her handmade wooden toys at our woolen stockinged feet.
Ha! Not likely! In all actuality we’ll likely be awakened to wind singing in the oven vent, a brisk chill in the cabin air that only a cold trip outside to the snow dusted woodpile will fix. Yes, coffee will be consumed (many cups) but those gulps will be likely be lukewarm and hastily imbibed between trips to the chicken coop with hot water to defrost the frozen (Hey, at least the birds get a hot drink on Saturday morning😉) and more trips to the barn with arm loads of grassy alfalfa and extra scoops of molasses-laced cob for the equine and bovine residents.
Recently, Zach and I were joking that if this weather keeps up we will need to string some ropes between cabin, coop, barn and woodpile so as not to get thrown off course in the midst of a blizzardy whiteout.
Remember how Pa had to tie a rope around his waist so he could be sure to find his way back to Ma, Laura, Mary and Carrie after going to the woodpile? Or was it to the barn to milk the cow? Or was it even really Pa? Now that I think about it, it may have been Ma... or Laura... 🤔
Hmmm, looks like I need to reread The Long Winter to get my facts straight. Luckily, I have another wee lass who will soon delight in the adventures of the Ingall’s family, and all the wonderful Little House books. Until then we’ll just keep on #livingliketheingalls
and I’ll keep on trying to channel gentle, industrious, gritty Ma in the midst of our own Long Winter on the Mountain.❄️❄️
Upstairs, tucked away on the guest bed, there's a lot of chitting going on. All of these are our own seed potatoes, saved from last year's harvest. First Earlies: Dunluce; Second Earlies: Kestrel, Jazzy; Maincrop: Blue Danube, Setanta, Sarpo Axona. Kestrel and Jazzy we tried for the first time last year and Kestrel was particularly outstanding - we're still eating them. A prolific second early, that stores well and is lovely boiled, baked or fried. We'll aim to plant these out in the last week of March (apart from the half dozen earlies already planted in cold frames). We do them all at the same time, which is early for the maincrop, but that gives them time to reach good size before the late blight season in August.
I have introduced my lovely Black Copper Maran pullets to Louis’ flock. The last time I did this it was a disaster - all the babies were killed by The Assassin. So I did things differently with this trio; firstly I left them to get older/bigger, then I let them free range with the main group but still kept them separate at night, then when I finally put them in with the flock, I kept The Assassin separate for a week. Louis is such a good rooster and won’t tolerate his girls fighting. One week in with the flock and they are all alive. They haven’t assimilated at all - but are healthy and seem happy enough. #backyardchickens #coppermaran #peckingorder #hobbyfarm #homesteading #organicfarming #eggs #freerange #chookpolitics
Masses of these bunches of grapes were hanging over this little cafe we stopped at for coffee this morning...and now I want a grape pergola 🍇
Five things Friday. Five things I've been jamming on this week. 1. My winter veggies are totally ready for eating 😍. 2. I tried out Inkbox tattoos to try our some new tattoos I've been considering. They were fun. 3. Friday margaritas. Nuff said. 4. So I went all instagrammy and got me a jade roller or in my case a rose quartz roller. Jury's still out on effects but it is refreshing. 5. A. Wall. Of. Patron. Mic drop

✨Instructions for living a life. Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it. (M. Oliver)✨
🌙Symplocarpus foetidus (Skunk cabbage) are found in marshy areas and streambeds. These plants are remarkable for generating up to 65 degrees heat above ground. This plus their skunky odor attracts insects who mate in the blossom and pollinate the flower. It’s theorized that their scent discourages deer from grazing along stream beds, protecting delicate shores and allowing native species to flourish
🌙Murmuration - I stood so still I could hear their wing beats between chirps
🌙Sarah, Chickoletta, Valkyrie, and Violet are pretty sure my planned herb garden site was meant for a dust bath.

Let’s all take a moment to reflect on how adorable Letty is. She’s a confident little queen and cute to boot.
Having fun playing with ideas for the homestead... trying not to bite off more than I can chew this year. 🐓 🐐 🌲 🏡
Did some garden planning and dreaming with The Husband today. So looking forward to warm weather, fertile soil, and watching things grow. 🍅🥦🍑
The garden won't be the only thing growing this spring... The Schoolhouse has its first student arriving late summer 2019 💗 As my belly grows and we anticipate the arrival of our first babe, I'm excited be in the fresh air and sunshine, ☀💐cultivating this space. We have big plans for the garden this year... And the nursery... And plans to get #thepennsyschoolhouse
finished up before Baby arrives.
We'll see how much energy and time we have for all the things, but it starts now: with the dream. And that's the part I'm best at 🌸

Bring back a little warmer temps, and a little sun for more PNW fun!! I think I just rhymed that perfectly 🤷🏻♀️🤣 I LOVE the PNW but this crazy snow has been...well, crazy. It was cool while it lasted but we’re more than ready to move on and into spring! 💐
I MANIFESTED THIS!
My homestead dreams are no secret. I put it out to the universe that I was done trying to force things. Force land, force tiny living, livestock... etc.
Just to be happy and TRULY thankful for what I have.
Once I opened my mind to that, I soon realized the land I’m on is quit workable!
Looked around and thought what can I do NOW to satisfy that want? Compost! Totally dove right on in, and put my heart and soul into it. Yeah, that sounds silly... but if this is the foundation to our garden, 🤷🏻♀️it makes sense.
Next thing I knew I was falling in love with my amazing neighbors chickens! How could a bird be so loving and dog like?!! AND how do I get some?!!! Well here I am!!! I’m working for the most amazing chicken breeder!
Today I was told which chickens I was able to take home and she jotted down the breeds I wanted to start as eggs.
This New Jersey Giant totally captivated my soul!
She is so loving, and I now have have the opportunity to raise one from a hatchling!!! All of my own!
This is my life! I fucking manifested these chickens into my life 🐓🙌🏻

Butternut, you got a little something...never mind 🤦🏼♀️😂
“Our age has become so mechanical that this has also affected our recreation. People have gotten used to sitting down and watching a movie, a ball game, a television set. It may be good once in a while, but it certainly is not good all the time. Our own faculties, our imagination, our memory, the ability to do things with our mind and our hands–they need to be exercised. If we become too passive, we get dissatisfied.” - Maria von Trapp, The Trapp Family Singers
Finally got sick of sore throats from sucking down chainsaw exhaust fumes every weekend and decided to up my PPE with an RZ M2 mask.
I don't need a full respirator and dust masks don't cut it, so something comfortable and free flowing enough that I'll actually wear it is perfect.
They're only like $35 bucks but they've got a Presidents Day sale right now for 25% off ('ABE25' at checkout, I think) which is the best coupon I've seen yet.
Do yourself a favor if you work with wood, small engines, welding, hay, or whatever and pick one up!
