“Stamped from the Beginning” has been an enjoyable, yet incredibly sobering read this summer. Historical figures who are constantly memorialized and lauded as the epitome of patriotism were actually the most racist, like good ol’ Thomas Jefferson. This book covers the history of racist ideas since ancient times to modern day. I realized very early on during the reading of this book that many of the same racist stereotypes, ideologies and justifications that existed throughout time parallel the racist stereotypes, ideologies and justifications societies across the globe uphold in modern times. The racism we deal with today came from somewhere, it has an ancient source. It didn’t appear from thin air. The history is long and it is deeply rooted into the fabric of our American society, founding documents and laws.
