How do we break bad habits and turn them into good ones? :) After reading the power of habit, I have learned that 40% of our daily actions are based on our habits. These habits work in 3 step loops: cue, routine and reward.
Here is my personal experience:
1. CUE (triggers you to do a habit)
I used to drink 2-3 cups of coffee (9am, 1pm and 3pm) during my rich****days in my previous workplace. (Don't be like me. Don't waste money. Don't abuse your body. )
2. ROUTINE (the behavior you automatically engage in)
My colleagues and I would go down from the office to grab coffee from costa or caribou. (Yes, the effort of walking under the heat of the sun just to get coffee)
3.) REWARD (completing the routine)
Having a cup of coffee just keeps my senses alive. It keeps me warm and happy too (it's the same way I feel towards ramen)
I get a chance to socialize with my amazing ex- colleagues or simply have a break time and walk around bay square area.
What exactly did I do to change this bad habit?
I started doing small steps per day. Instead of drinking 3 cups, I strictly ordered one or not order at all. The next few weeks, I substituted coffee and drank organic krocus kozanis tea from greece.
Frankly speaking, it was not easy at first but then I realized that anything that is excessive is bad for my health (pulpitations, stomach pains, heart burns) and wallet (if you sum up the total cost of coffee expenses, I could have taken up another savings or investment funds from Zurich.) If you really want to change anything in your life whethere it is concerns your health, career or relationship, I believe discipline and willpower is very important to keep you going and stay on track until you achieve your goal.
