Basil is a natural tranquiliser and is said to be a tonic and to calm the nervous system. It is a remarkable detoxifying herb with antibacterial properties, reacting on the digestive system and easing stomach cramps, colic and indigestion; it may also relieve nausea.
Basil Tea Tea made with basil leaves and honey is made into syrup to treat coughs, colds, and fevers. The tea without honey makes an excellent gargle for sore throats, thrush, mouth ulcers and bleeding gums. To make an herbal tea chop a quarter cup of leaves and fill with boiling water, allow it to steep for 5 minutes before straining and drinking. Up to 3 cups can be taken daily for 10 days, with a break for 3 days; then repeat for another 10 days. The tea can also be applied to the skin with cotton wool to treat skin ailments.
