When your counterpart starts taking photos of you because you are a red-faced sweaty mess after spending 2 hours in the sun officiating the long jump for Sports Day, you pull out your phone and start taking photos of her too! 📸
Today was Sports! In Guyana, Sports Day is a field day when the students in the school compete in their houses (Hogwarts, anyone?) in a series of field events. Running events are on Friday! I made the mistake of mentioning I used to jump, so 2 minutes before the event started I was handed a microphone and a piece of paper and told to run the event with the whole school watching! Thankfully, it was a blast! But at the end of it, I was sunburnt and sweaty, and my counterpart found that hilarious, so she decided to take pictures. •
Though it’s less than flattering, this picture makes me happy because, to me, it is an image of integration! Not the kind you find on the Peace Corps flyers, but my own little piece of the process. •
My counterpart took this photo as a joke, with a smile on her face, and laughing with me, not just at me. She is the kind of person who only messes with people she likes - I recognise that because I’m the same way! Taking unflattering pictures of each other, as silly as it sounds, was a bonding moment for me and my counterpart. So, if being silly, putting myself out there, and not being afraid to get a little messy is what it takes to feel like one of the teachers and not just the new kid at school, I’ll happily do it again. In the meantime, though, it’s time for a shower!
