Yesterday, my lovely friend came all the way Glasgow to visit us here in Birmingham for the weekend. One of our plans was to visit Canon Hill Park and what a lovely, green and lively place it was. As we were walking through the park I spotted this bridge and ran to the edge of the pond to take a photo. Only after I started carefully looking around and noticed that the previously so idyllic looking pond was actually filled with rubbish (all the white speckles in the photos are pieces of rubbish). What a truly saddening view. I have previously mentioned in my stories that out of all the cities and towns I have seen in the UK, Birmingham is by far the dirtiest - there is rubbish everywhere, in every street and green area alike. In fact, in the neighbouring house in our street someone is chucking rubbish out of their kitchen window as if we still lived in the Middle Ages. Something needs to be done @bhamcitycouncil.
People and businesses need to be educated and helped to dispose waste correctly, and the council really needs to step up its game. This park has apparently been awarded a Green Flag Award, but that must have been a good while back.. apologies for this very negative rant - I will end with a more positive message to @bhamcitycouncil
: hire me, if you need a creative and passionate graduate to help make this a greener zero waste city. 🙋🏼♀️
The veggie patch might have been mightily neglected this year 😖 (and going overseas for 2 months in prime Autumn planting weather did not help at all😶) but nature is a generous force, and she still continues to provide.🌱🌱🌱 Currently picking capsicums (smaller than would be expected in summer, but as it's the middle of winter❄, I'll take it!) and cape gooseberries (inca berries, for anyone who knows them as this from the health food store). I've also got lemons🍋, a couple of pumpkins, so much parsley I'm pretty much living off parsley pesto, sweet potato (of course!)🍠 and a bunch of rather chewed stems of various greens - I suspect crickets, but cannot find the greedy pests. Whoever it is has even eaten my curry leaf plant leaves🍂 - and they are pretty pungent!
DIY snack bags made with HEMP liners! Today I found the cuuuutest fabric store here in Waterloo @spoolandspindle
who carried hemp fabric (and has awesome, very knowledgeable staff)! These snack bags are not waterproof but bags that are, are almost always made with laminated fabric or PUL aka polyurethane laminate which is a plastic polymer. Even if it’s BPA free, food grade, phthalate free etc, it’s still a plastic coated fabric which means it will leach chemicals and won’t break down when it finally reaches the dump. Hemp, on the other hand, is a natural, absorbent, strong, hypoallergenic, sustainable fibre that also has antimicrobial properties and is mildew resistant!

Oh how much I enjoyed my visit at @tanteolgakoeln
- THE zero waste shop in Cologne. The team was so nice and took time to assist & explain, I found many things I was looking for, enjoyed a nice coffee and the total of 4 hours bike ride to get there and back 🚴🏻♀️💪🏻💚. I already guessed that I would buy a lot of heavy stuff and therefore took the bicycle trailer with me - luckily 😂. I found bathroom supplies, many snacks, different flours, fresh almond cream, vegan cream cheese and cleaning supplies.

Just a reminder to bring your own reusable cup! It doesn’t have to be expensive, it can even be from goodwill or an old jar you have at home! You can find the lids for the jars at target and Walmart and most placed are carrying straws. •
Even if you drink soda most gas stations have a soda fountain and they don’t care if you use your own cup. I’ve used mine at subway and even the movie theater. •
Think about how many disposable cups you use daily and how all those just go in the landfill, plastic doesn’t just disappear. It doesn’t go away and it is causing such devastation on this earth. I ask you please get a reusable cup and please help reduce the amount of plastic you consume, if you love this earth and loving being out in all its glory please make the switch to reusable. ✨

WHY RECYCLING PLASTIC DOESN'T (REALLY) WORK... #goplasticfree
People are told to recycle and if they do, they often think problems are solved right after their trash gets into a proper recycle bin. This may be true for paper, glass, metal but not for plastic. Plastics are often downcycled into inferior products or sometimes recycled into different products with unintended consequences. -
Reports say that 9% of all plastic produced was recycled, while 12% was burned and remaining 79% ended up in landfills or elsewhere (oceans, streets, you name it).
There are several reasons why plastic is not recycled. It starts with people reluctant to sort their waste, another problem is that not all plastic is profitable to recycle while making new is cheaper. In countries with high labor cost is it more economical to burn it while making electricity or heat. Long story short, plastic has many forms and characteristics that make recycling process complex and difficult.
Producers need to be responsible and products design needs to include recycling part - what will happen when product is consumed, broken or obsolete.
Depending on our consumer habits, we can shop more of less easily plastic free which is always the best. Fortunately, we can do more then blindly buying plastic and trashing in into recycle bin. 🌱
How does your country deal with waste? 🙄

This year we've committed to reducing our use of plastic wherever possible... and for the women of Wholesome Hub, that means #PlasticFreePeriods
too! Natracare is a new brand at Wholesome Hub, providing women with soft, certified organic biodegradable cotton pads, tampons and liners that are free from chlorine bleaches and plastic.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can everyone think when getting rid of rubbish, make sure plastics are recycled where possible or even try going plastic free? The beaches in Bali are such a state with all the plastics, it’s so sad 😢 we need to start taking care of our oceans, the corals, turtles, fish etc. This is just a tiny fraction of the rubbish we saw on the beach today whilst exploring. Wish we could have collected more to clear the beaches but we’d have been there forever.

Day 15: Glass and Stainless-steel containers for our food. As of 2018 this household adopted a #plasticfree
policy for food containers 😊💪🏼. We started a slow but steady transition to replace old plastic containers. In the process, we’ve come to realize that glass can be used in the oven, freezer and fridge! It doesn’t get stained, it doesn’t bend, it doesn’t keep odors, it doesn’t peel off, and it doesn’t wear out! Who ever said plastic was more practical? 🤨 If you worry about weight for your to-go’s then stainless steel is a much better alternative to plastic too. Primarily because plastic also leaks chemicals into your food and beverages, and even more so when being warmed up 🔥 Here the lunchbox from @planetbox
that our son will use in school. If you think about the cost, plastic might be cheaper but needs to be constantly replaced and is made from non-renewable resources that will go sit in a landfill or in the wild for EVER if not properly recycled!!! How about that for a cost? 🤔 If glass brakes it can ALWAYS be reused! (Please recycle ♻️); the best principle of a circular economy that we so need to be sustainable consumers and producers! 👌🏻🙌🏻🌿🌍 #goplasticfree #consciouslifestylebaby #yayforearth #chemicalfreeliving #21daychallenge @waterthruskin @thefaria

Who else loves scented candles? Well, I do too. 😉Recently, however, I have become more aware of the amount of waste that candles (too) generate. A good while back I decided to first of all use less candles and second, to only buy and use scented candles that come in a recyclable or - even better - in a reusable container, like this candle. It is now a jar for corn flour! .
The easiest way to get rid of any leftover wax in and old candle glass or metal container is to get some boiling hot water, put it in a pot and stick the container in there, but don’t let water get inside the jar to avoid wax getting into the water! After a minute or two, the wax should have melted enough to just pour it out of the jar. After that I washed it well with soap and hot water to make sure all wax was gone. And then filled it with some corn flour. I think I will only store dry foods in the jar, just to be safe 😘

We like to stock products that we actually use in our own homes, and these Swag bags are definitely one product we love! 👌💚They are a completely plastic-free, multi-layered, breathable bag made of unbleached cotton that is non-toxic, machine washable, reusable (of course!) and designed for keeping veggies crisp and lovely 🍎🌽🍅🍠We make the outside a little bit damp before popping in the fridge, and they make our fruit and veggies stay tasty and happy for much longer than anything else we have tried.🙂Questions? We're in the shop today until 5.30pm, or tomorrow 9.30am - 4pm. We love to chat too, so ask us all your questions!👂
This gorgeous collection of soaps were sent to me by @primalsuds
to try out. They’re U.K. based and make vegan soaps that are free from nasties. I’m loving one without any scent for removing my make up, and the others smell amazing, but not overpowering like synthetic scents. The one I’m using in the shower smells of sherbet and is less drying than many soaps I’ve tried. I’ve almost finished my oat exfoliating soap so it’s great to have one that I can now move onto.
These all came completely plastic free and my skin seems to be really happy with them so far! If you’re looking for some new soaps, especially if you’re from the U.K., think about checking them out. But as always, only buy if you really need them 😊

I am addicted to lip balm, especially now that it is getting colder again, slowly but surely... I absolutely love those round, almost egg-shaped, colourful @eosproducts
lipbalms, but the container is so plasticky that there is probably more plastic than lip balm in the product - and the same goes for many other lip balms out there. Luckily there are quite a few plastic free alternatives available. I have previously tried a lovely one from @wasserneutral
and now decided to buy this @bloomtownuk
lipbalm to try. It is light and not sticky, 100% natural and vegan, palm oil free and smells b-e-a-utiful. 🍓❤️ And of course it comes in a recyclable metal container. Even these small changes make a difference! #plasticfreerevolution
Looking to replace those polybags in the supermarket with something reusable and local? @britishredcross
charity shop in Lerwick has these funky reusable bags for sale for a good cause! They would also be brilliant washable bags for mini beach cleans! Pop along and give money to charity, support local and save the planet at the same time! 🤑💚
Cookies! 🍪🍪🍪 These little nuggets are one of my go-to recipes, made of...chickpeas! 😜 240g cooked chickpeas (the equivalent of a tin), 1/2 cup peanut butter, 1/4 cup rice malt syrup/honey (probably a bit less if you use maple syrup as it is runnier than the others) and a couple of pinches of salt. Blend to combine then stir through 75g chopped chocolate. Roll into balls (I like to keep mine tiny so I don't feel so guilty when I eat 6 at once 🙊) and bake on a medium heat for 10-15 minutes until beginning to turn golden. You can use almond butter instead of peanut butter, and I'm sure other nut butters would work too but those are my faves. Yum! 😋
Every minute, nearly a million plastic beverage bottles are purchased around the world. Most of these bottles end up in landfill or in the oceans. It’s not enough to clean up and boost recycling. We all need to do whatever we can to help turn off the plastic tap.

This is such a heartbreaking and horrible image to see of a hedgehog which died after it got stuck inside a disposable cup 😭💔 However, it's important that people realise the consequences of their actions! .
Everyday wildlife all over the world is dying because of litter and plastic pollution. It's such a huge issue and yet it's just ONE of the reasons why we need to do something about it 🙅 This is NOT OK! .
Hedgehogs and other small mammals are particularly at risk of being affected by litter because of their size. Hedgehog numbers have already significantly declined in recent years, so we need to make sure that plastic pollution isn't contributing to this decline! We should be giving wildlife every chance of survival, not killing them with thoughtless actions! 🙈
It can be easy to feel helpless in situations like this but every person has their role to play in fighting against plastic pollution >> Get involved in litter picks and beach cleans, reduce your own plastic consumption, educate others about the impacts of dropping litter and plastic pollution. We can all make a difference! 💪🏼Do it for wildlife, Do it for yourself, Do it for David! 👊

We dropped into the allotment this afternoon to grab some kale for the bunnies.
While there, we also checked the exciting progress of our sweetcorns, spotted stripey tomatoes developing, harvested and immediately ate some raspberries (they were covered in hungry shield beetles, one of whom befriended Master R) and did a quick wheelbarrow of weeding.
The strimmer broke in June, so it's all gone a bit wild this summer. Typically, I have shredded the receipt so I can't return it. I optimistically took it apart, thinking if it was a loose wire I could put it right. It wasn't a loose wire, and I haven't managed to get if back together ... yet. 🙄

Soap bars - One very pleasant side effect of going plastic free is falling in love with bar soaps and there are many wonderful ones out there to fall for. My boyfriend and I have now totally swapped over to using soap and shampoo bars and so far they have been good to my skin and hair, really fun to use and they have given me a cleaner conscience. They also make your bathroom smell great! What is your favourite bar soap?
Since my boyfriend stole my soap and shampoo bars, I decided to buy him some of his own from a new natural and plastic free brand @conchuslife.
I also got a shampoo bar and a face wash bar for myself to try. The bars smell lovely and, as you can see in the photo, they are also very generous in size. Looking forward to trying them out!

💭🎶 Imagine if there was a band who went around touring festivals like Glastonbury, except rather than singing about the usual rock 'n' roll kinda things, they sang memorable rhymes about plastic and waste🚯, growing vegetables🌱, sustainable living 🌏, and making kimchi!😋 Actually there is such a band - Formidable Vegetable Sound System - headed up by my friend Charlie McGee (that's him, singing about plastic - I defy you not to get that song stuck in your head!😝). This is probably my second favourite song of theirs (my absolute favourite is There's No Such Thing As Waste - go to YouTube and type the title track in and look it up. It's like the theme tune for my life!😍🚯✅) They are currently crowdsourcing to produce their new album (you'll find the link and more details at @formidableveg
👈) If you are someone who believes in supporting independent musicians🎤, spreading the sustainability message and you like listening to songs about reducing waste and making fermented vegetables, be sure to check them out! 💚
