Meet @serrano.fitness ! โ€œAndrew Serrano is a full-time strength coach out of Long Beach, California. He received his B.S. in Exercise Science with an emphasis in physical therapy From CSU Long Beach and has a background in both competitive powerlifting and bodybuilding. Tired of being the little guy (he wrestled in the 103lb weight class in high school, without cutting weight) he convinced his dad to buy him a Bowflex when he was 15 and found his passion for strength training. Soon after, he joined the local Goldโ€™s Gym where he was lucky enough to find several mentors that he still credits much of his success to. By his 18th birthday, he had won a bodybuilding show and several powerlifting meets, his most notable lift being a 407 bench press in the 165lb weight class as a junior in the APF. Andrew took a break from competing while in school where he gained exposure to the different facets of collegiate strength and conditioning, he even had the chance to work with the Welsh rugby team while studying abroad in Wales. Working in a physical therapy clinic after graduating, he decided the clinical setting wasnโ€™t for him and heโ€™s been working as a private coach for the past 11 years. He combines these experiences to create programs for people that create the strongest version of themselves while staying pain and injury free, this philosophy is what drew him to the 10/20/life style of programming. Although his primary focus is on coaching, he plans on returning to competition in 2018 in the 198lb weight class.โ€ ... There were only about 24 lifters total in the meet, including all of the bench only lifters. For squats, as soon as the wraps came off it was back to about 5-6 out. Bench went a little slower thanks to the bench only lifters, but as soon as that ended deadlift warmups had to be taken. I believe I took my first squat around 9:45am, and deadlifts started at about 12. My deadlift opener went nice and easy, so 650 was in the books. I still felt pretty fresh from not doing any kind of real weight cut, so I thought I would take 700 on a second and end up trying about 722 on a third. The pace of the day was catching up to me, and I didnโ€™t finish off my 700 attempt at the very end of the lockout. They had a nice new deadlift bar that I got to break in by tearing my hands and knee open on it, leaving a good amount of blood and skin all over the bar and floor. Iโ€™ve missed deadlifts before and come back to get them, so I took it again on my 3rd attempt. I tried to stop the bleeding as much as I could while simultaneously gluing my hands back together for one last pull. This time it was still a close pull, but I just couldnโ€™t finish it.โ€ ... Below is a brief excerpt. ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡ โ€œSunday was the worst of it, and although every ounce of my body screamed at me to stay home, there was major work to be done. With so many limited training days left due to travel, I really do not have the luxury of taking a single event day off. That does not mean I did not take my bodies current situation into consideration. Something I have learned over the years is that training while sick is always a gamble. Sometimes you absolutely smash it and other times you dance too long with the devil and you end up crashing really hard after training, or worse, you get even more sick. I took this day as a way of polishing off 2 weeks of no events and testing my backs ability to do a decent log press and yoke back to back. I stayed within my lanes with a 285 log and a 600 pound yoke. Both light numbers for there given events but not so light It did not bring perspective. The log is merely a matter of rust but the yoke will be a series of Tetris style problem solving going forward as we creep closer to 850 pounds with a sassy spine and knee. I know that Iโ€™m still ahead of schedule on the squat (compared to other cycles) but form is off. I feel like Iโ€™m babying it on the way down as wellโ€œ What I See Hello Handsome Bob, To start, the un-rack is a bit off. You donโ€™t look totally wedged from the go. You rotate your head down as soon as you take the bar out of the rack. This tends to flare your upper back (watch your elbow as the weight gets heavy, IT RISES!). If you get that reference, I like you even more. The falling back: IMO โ€“ itโ€™s a result of your upper back not being locked it and head position. You kind of hinge on the way up as you drive your heels, especially when the weight gets heavy. The movement causes you to be unstable and therefore rock back on your heels as you try to compensate for bad leverage. ... Potential Solution Get your head up a little more and lock in your upper back. Donโ€™t wait to โ€˜pull your elbows downโ€™ during the transition, get it right from the start. No micro-movement. Lock your latโ€™s in and donโ€™t let them budge. Youโ€™re still early in cycle to worry too much. Fix what I see is the major cause now, and you will find your descent speed and groove. Meet Team #powerrackstrength member @lcstrength (Will Kuenzel). Will Kuenzel is the owner of Lowcountry Strength (www.LowcountryStrength.com) in Charleston, SC. Will started his athletic endeavors as a pole vaulter; finishing up his collegiate career with a best vault of 16โ€™9โ€ at a whopping 160lbs. He left the track and field world to pursue bodybuilding, his first show in 2005, he won 1st place in Menโ€™s Novice as a middle weight. One year later he took 2nd as a Menโ€™s Junior heavy weight.
