Ridley Scott - Thelma & Louise - 1991
I'm a day late, but 32 years ago yesterday, David Cronenberg released his 1986 remake of 'The Fly'. The film starred @jeffgoldblum
, Geena Davis, and John Getz.
It is one of my favourite remakes of all time, up there with 'Scarface'. Excellent science fiction, some darkly twisted humour, body horror (which Cronenberg does so very well), and some very impressive special effects makeup.
If you've never seen it, give it a try. It's a damn good film, but be aware, it's not for the faint of heart. #courtshake #thefly #davidcronenberg #jeffgoldblum #geenadavis #johngetz #fly #howardshore #scifihorror #sethbrundle #veronicaquaife #telepods #teleportation #stathisborans #housefly #brundlefly #brundlepod #monkeycat #butterflybaby #horrorflick #horrorclassic #theflymovie #toronto #filmedintoronto #flatironbuilding #zanzibar #kensingtonmarket #cultclassic #80smovies #baxterstockman
Pat Mills - Don't Talk to Irene (2017)
A good natured and good intentioned movie about being yourself and thriving in your own uniqueness, Don't Talk to Irene is great fun. It is also a bit over-earnest and slightly naive, but its heart is in the right place so you have to excuse it.
As a comedy it works really well, Irene is a great character, a slightly kooky but assertive and smart girl who want to be a cheerleader in spite of not looking like what is usually accepted as such. The problems with the naivety of the film arise from the fact that it has a pretty unbelievable resolution, Irene's genderqueer friend has the right idea when he thinks of what she is doing as punk, as subverting society's expectations. However Irene wants a rotten society to accept her and to change to help her fit in, instead of actually tearing the whole thing down and creating her own space.
The fact that in the end Irene becomes a part of the pre-existing order of things instead of creating a new order is what is slightly disappointing. Oh well. Still it is a lot of fun, the cast is great with a cast of old-people from the retirement home which is just fantastic as well as a special appearance (and a lot of voice over) by Geena Davis! Yay. (3.5/5)

Today in Horror Movie History: The "Fly" was released in 1986.
We’ve come here to say one magic word to you: “Cheeseburger.” On this day in cinematic history we were buzzed for the first time by one of the best remakes ever...and easily one of the biggest “body horror” (read: “gross-out” for the uninitiated) movies of all time. David Cronenberg brought us pathos-laden brilliance in tandem with some delicious helpings of the most gooey, oozy, insectoid moments in sci-fi horror. But, perhaps more importantly, it’s a film rife with rock-solid performances and one of the most believably tragic love-triangles ever lensed. Jeff Goldblum’s Brundlefly, Geena Davis, and even John Getz’s (somewhat) villain make it a surprisingly, emotional love story that (easily, in our opinion) outranks the original 50’s Price film, as well as the original Langelaan short-story first published in a 1957 issue of Playboy. Prepare for the insect politician of your artistic dreams, Fiends! Fellow Teenage Werewolves @stephenlurosholiday
and friends at @guttergarbs
knocked the telepod out of print lab with their rendering of THE FLY. Pick one up @guttergarbs
and be afraid... be very afraid.
THE FLY (1986). One of the greatest horror movies of the 1980's, let alone maybe all time. This remake set the bar for body horror, and to this day still stuns audiences, both new and old. Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum) is a scientist working on teleportation. Just when he thinks he's ironed out the last bug in his system, the intervention of a common house fly turns Seth into a 6 foot insect. The transformation from man to fly is gradual but horrific, and is witnessed by Veronica Quaife (Geena Davis); a reporter documenting Seth's story. Seth has some time to try to find a cure, but is there enough time...? Directed by David Cronenberg. One of my all time favourites. This absolute masterpiece was released August 15th, 1986. Half man. Half insect. Total terror.
