Danny Elfman “Beetlejuice OST” 1988 (30th anniversary Re-issue) #nowspinning
I’ve noticed this rise in these so called “lady pictures” 🧐 where the leads all share only 1 personality type... Ocean’s 8 may have had 2... Which is a shame because those films feel so uninspired compared to the perfection on gender role politics that is great late Penny Marshall’s A League of Their Own.
Mind you the movie has the advantage of being a true story, based on real people, and has Jon Lovitz, but the writing and character work are all so damn on point: women in a men’s game, struggles to be taken seriously, a drunk coach, a rivalry in the team. Sounds a lot like Netflix’s GLOW.... And that show is great!
And it’s clean family fun. (Sorta. Kids can watch it. STD jokes are fine. Why not?) You have a fantastically fun and witty script, poking at the sexism of the ‘40s, the irony of these girls painted as feminine all-Americans when they’re as rough and tough as any athlete, and best of all, and this is the part that most films today suck at: the girls have that insecurity they hide behind or later face it, like thinking a fella wouldn’t find them attractive, or not a strong ball player, or have past regrets they wallow in secret through addictions.
I find it brilliant that the best, prettiest, smartest, and strongest ball player, Geena Davis, is the one that just wants her husband back from the war, and it’s her sister, “Tank Girl” Lori Petty, who’s given a hard time when she wants most to be a real ball player. It’s great old-fashioned, 3 dimensional character writing to bring out a empathetic individuality. The next thing the film does right is casting the film JUST RIGHT who fit the distinct and contrasting ensemble. Then finally there’s Penny, a real comedic talent trained in the art of balancing comedy with heart, to lead the actors to be next to perfect. HEY, if a movie can have me actually LIKE Rosie O’Donnell and Madonna in a role, that’s some kind of perfection in my books. A look and feel this film has is hard to come by now adays. #nowwatching #cinephile #lovemovies #cinema #movies #movie #film #cinephilecommunity #aleagueoftheirown #geenadavis #tomhanks #loripetty #madonna #baseball #theresnocryinginbaseball #80smovies #classicfilm

The Long Kiss Goodnight (Itunes, HD)
Shane Black’s sharp wit and dark humor combined with over the top action (there is a figure skating shoot-out and people out run fire). The combination works and its mostly because Geena Davis kicks so much ass.
She plays the amnesiac PTA mom as well as a super spy slowly remembering her past while discovering her abilities along the way. They felt like two comepletey different people and her perfecmance as each was perfect.
She even delivers the Shane Black dialogue just as well as Samuel L Jackson does, a man who built a career out of how he says “mother fucker”. Their chemistry is seemless. I love how he humor came not only from the dialogue but the action as well. They beat the shit out of Samuel L Jackson who’s character miraculously becomes the moral center of the film for a decent stretch.
Most of the clever dialogue and plot points land which makes it easy to ignore the dates visual effects, goofy direction and cartoonish moments (the one-Eyed character with the sci-fi gun?) and In some cases, I would argue it makes these flaws charming.
I think this is an action-comedy gem of the 1990’s and you can see the bones of this in ‘Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” for sure.

How Geena Davis is Fighting to Close Hollywood's Gender Gap⠀
Help us close the gap!
The person who said ‘never meet your heroes’ must have picked the wrong heroes. Because I got to hang out with Geena Davis, who has been showing us what not-taking-shit looks like since ‘91, and she is awesome. The Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media (@gdigm
) provides research to back up what is anecdotally obvious to anyone who has eyeballs: Female characters are woefully underrepresented on screen. Even when they are cast as the lead, women have about 60% of the dialogue that male leads do. It’s true.
P.S. She is 61!
P.P.S. She was 6’6” in the heels she wore for the shoot!!
Thanks ever so much for the assignment @instylemagazine

Geena Davis was encouraged by the number of females elected in the midterms, but knows there’s still a LONG way to go — in Washington and Hollywood. “It’s going to take tremendous effort over decades to get anywhere close to parity,” she says, “but onscreen we could reach parity overnight.” The @GDIGM
sets out to do just that. The institute’s studies have confirmed the shocking gender inequalities that plague Hollywood, and are working to fight them. “When there’s a female lead, she’s onscreen and speaks about a third of the time that a male lead does, which is astounding,” she tells @ChrsitineLennonplus2.
