In 1962 Jnana Prabodhini was founded by Late Shri V.V. alias Appaji Pendse. He was an Educationist, a thought leader, social organizer, an active ideologue and a visionary personality. Swami Vivekananda’s thought of ‘changing the face of the Nation, through Education’ inspired him and thus Jnana Prabodhini was founded which means ‘Awakener of Real Knowledge’. Appasaheb Pendse also believed in cultural values and encouraged students to keep themselves active in cultural activities. He was a creative, artistic person too and had a good sense of Music; with the love of Music he started first Prabodh school boy’s pathak in 1964.
First Appaji Pendse introduced Barchi dance form, not many people are aware of Barchi Dance; Basically it is a systematic, energetic and disciplined group dance art form. As it is a dance form hence requires some kind of rhythm, and so he added Dhol-Tasha for the rhythm generation. Barchi has a historical significance dated to Shivaji Maharaj’s era when it was used as a war weapon. Appaji also introduced Saffron Dhwaj (Flag) in pathak. Till then Dhwaj was never used in procession the way it is danced today with pride.
Do you know that during that period Dhol-Tasha were not easily available in Pune like they are available today. Appa and his team used to reach out to villages near Pune and organize dhols which were made up of wood. Now Appaji’s team has pathak, Barchi, Dhwaj, Dhol, Tashas…. What next? What happened next was a beginning of one disciplined and systematic institution what we all are experiencing today. Appaji Pendse showed his artistic side and formed 7 traditional Dhol formations or Taal what we hear today along with total 11 formations of Barchi Dance. Appaji and his team took a lot of efforts to make it possible; today we can see and experience the impact of it.
