I'm convinced that this balancing act all hinged on the perfect amount of tounge sticking out. 😜😝😛
We got bogged in the soft sand on this pass several times when heading North to the top of the island. I was clearly relieved after getting through on the way back as the sun was close to setting and we were pushed for time. From the passenger seat there was pure excitement 😂
SS Maheno Fraser Island🛳#island
SS Maheno on fraser Island at sunset really beautiful colors these nights also I got an old photo from Wikipedia to show how she used to look when she washed a shore in 1935. I'm sure many people have taken this shot but what the hell it looks nice!
Later gram Day 57, part 6:
Our last stop before dinner, we viewed the wreckage of the S.S. Maheno, a New Zealander former cruise liner turned hospital ship during World War I.
After being decommissioned from military service in 1918, it was used as a commercial liner again until 1935 when it was bought by the Empire of Japan for scrap metal.
Towed by the Oonah on its way to Japan in July 1935, a cyclone snapped the wire between the ships and with its propellers removed, it eventually washed ashore to Fraser Island.
Efforts to salvage the ship proved unsuccessful and it remains on the shore to this day.
During World War II, Fraser Island was a training ground for the special forces Z unit that consisted of British, Australian, New Zealander, and Dutch soldiers.
They used the wreckage of the Maheno for a training exercise that would later become the most successful clandestine military operation ever in Operation Jaywick in 1943.
Fourteen Z Unit commandos sank 7 Japanese shipping vessels (39,000 tons) in Singapore via kayak before escaping home to Australia undetected.
The limpet mines that were used to sink the ships were first tested on the wreckage of the Maheno.
Lest We Forget.

Dingoes are Australia’s wild dog and are found in all habitat types such as alpine, woodland, grassland, desert and tropical regions. Head over to Fraser Island if you want to see some of the purest straining dingoes in their natural habitat ☺️ Thanks for sharing @ecoscientist
