If you like ‘French’ fare with a side order of loud R&B tunes, and don’t mind dining in an empty restaurant, then by all means, pay new Dubai opening, @lefrenchydubai in the Byblos Dubai Marina hotel a visit. Such a shame, because the food is in fact excellent, even if not traditional French classics, like the website promises. The clue is in the branding - ‘Bar & Restaurant’ states the website. The bar is in fact the centrepiece, which gets busier late at night, so we are told, until a closing time of 3am. More in my review now live - see link in profile. What makes you return to a restaurant? 🍴🍷 #foodivareviews
Dubai now boasts its first licensed Georgian restaurant, and, arguably, the first establishment here dedicated to this rich and fragrant cuisine 😋. We have had the odd café serving food from across the Caucasus region for a little while. @modi.dxb which means 'welcome' in Georgian, has opened on the 31st floor of Sofitel Downtown Dubai and our window table, which I request on booking, enjoys Sheikh Zayed views. More in my review now live - see link in profile. Georgia is a popular destination for UAE folks, so what Georgian dishes would you recommend I try next time? 😜. Because there will most definitely be a next time! 🥟 #foodivareviews

When I call a newly opened Mexican restaurant @lacarnita_dxb on a Friday, for an evening reservation, the hostess advises that only a 7 to 9pm slot is available. A booking strategy or is it really that busy? As it happens, I love early weekend dining when am reviewing and we’re in and out by 8.30pm. Do first impressions always count? More in my review now live - see link in profile. Where’s your go-to spot for Mexican fare? 🌮 #foodivareviews
Restaurant opening season has kicked in. Not that Dubai needs any more 🙈. Anyhow, first up is casual Mexican import (from Canada) @lacarnita_dxb at Intercontinental Dubai Marina (replacing Ynot wine bar). Here we have sesame and pomegranate glazed lamb chops 😋. Not particularly Mexican, but they were finger lickin’ delicious. Just a teaser until my review goes live soon 😜. What other new openings would you like me to prioritise? Anyone tried La Carnita in Canada? 🍴🍸 #foodivareviews
🍽 NEW RESTAURANT REVIEW 🍽. @hotelcartagenadxb is not a hotel, as I thought when the first email landed in my inbox a couple of months ago. But it is IN a hotel. A new Latino restaurant in Dubai has replaced short-lived Morah atop @jwmarriottmarquisdubai ’s second tower (just above sibling Weslodge). The name is based on a fictional character (yes another one) - Mrs Buendia - who inherited the fictional hotel. Anyway, as it’s all fiction, who cares? More importantly, let’s see how the dining experience fares. Review now live – see link in profile. Would you enjoy hearing an explanation of a fictional story behind a restaurant’s concept, or are you not fussed? Could it enhance the dining experience for you?🍴🍷 #foodivareviews #foodiva
Out with Morah; in with new Latino restaurant, @hotelcartagenadxb (atop @jwmarriottmarquisdubai ’s second tower). Finger lickin’ chicken chicharones, gobbled up like popcorn 😋. Sadly, I wasn’t just recognised by one person but five 🙈. Time to don a wig and glasses me thinks...or retire. Here’s where you need to go to find the friendly faces from much-missed Q’bara. More in my review soon. Who’s tried it and what do you think? 🍴🍷🍗 #foodivareviews #foodiva
🍕 NEW RESTAURANT REVIEW 🍕. Says guest contributor @finediningmatt : After contributing to FooDiva’s UAE pizza round-up, @akibadori at @d3dubai presents a great opportunity to apply my passion for ‘real’ pizza in a new restaurant review. For me, technical requirements aside, pizza should be simple but packed with flavour explosions as you hit layers of creamy cheese, tangy tomato and fragrant herbs. Akiba Dori promises that authentic Italian experience but with a Japanese twist. Can a Tokyo-Neapolitan hybrid concept work? Have you tried it? Review now live – see link in profile. 🍕🍴🍷🍺 #wheretoeatpizza #wheretoeatpizzauae #foodivareviews
✨NEW RESTAURANT REVIEW✨. When guest contributor @finediningmatt sees that his favourite dish of all time, bouillabaisse, is on the menu @morimotodubai he is intrigued and excited to see if parity can be achieved. How does his dining experience compare to the likes of Zuma? Find out in his review now live – see link in profile. Can ‘classics’ be successful when cooked differently? Are you a stickler for tradition, or a fan of innovation and novelty? 🍜🍷 #foodivareviews #foodiva
✨NEW RESTAURANT REVIEW✨. I struggle with Emirates Financial Towers in DIFC as a dining location. It takes two entrances, two elevators and three hostesses to get into new Dubai restaurant opening @crabmarketdxb on the 15th floor 🙈. Will the day ever come in Dubai where I can walk straight into a restaurant from the street and order a glass of wine? Is that too much to ask for given I am paying more for my dinner than most cities in the world? Actually you can with one DIFC restaurant, plus those at D3. But we need more. Anyhow, does the food prevail over the location? More in my review now live – see link in profile. Do you frequent any licensed restaurants here with easy street access? 🦀🦀🦀 #foodivareviews #foodiva
✨NEW RESTAURANT REVIEW✨. Does one have to understand art to appreciate it or can one just look at a masterpiece and say – wow? How about assessing culinary artwork? Likely some familiarity with the quality of ingredients does help in better appreciation of what sits on the plate. So, when @chefizu explains the subtleties of his humble bread dipped in olive oil and vinegar, anon guest reviewer AK ponders whether he would appreciate this start to the meal less, had Izu not enlightened him with specific attributes and origins of the ingredients. More in his review of Izu’s latest venture, @carine.ae at Emirates Golf Club now live – see link in profile.🍴🍷🥧 #foodivareviews #foodiva
Look at these mammoth crab legs 😋😋😋. I give you succulent Kamchatka crab from the Bering Sea and imported from Russia (otherwise known as Red King or Alaskan King crab). At new opening @crabmarketdxb in Emirates Financial Towers, a consultancy project for the Bulldozer Group by the famous @whiterabbitmoscow. Dinner review last night where, thankfully, I wasn’t recognised. More in my review soon. Do you have a favourite crab species? 🦀🦀🦀 #foodivareviews #foodiva
✨NEW RESTAURANT REVIEW✨. How does @asiadecubadxb in Dubai (@westindubai ) compare to Abu Dhabi? It will take something special to beat the picturesque views and effortless charm of Abu Dhabi says guest reviewer @finediningmatt 😋. Comparing the menus is the first hint that Dubai is NOT a carbon copy of the original venue. More in his review now live on #FooDiva – see link in profile. Have you dined at Asia de Cuba in the UAE or elsewhere? Which do you prefer?🍴🍸 #foodivareviews
Is new opening @beefbardubai worth the high price point? Located in DIFC's Al Fattan Currency House, Beefbar is tucked away in a cosy corner on the podium level and strategically located next to sister restaurant @crazyfishdubai - both have replaced Cle. This global chain boasts restaurants in its home Monte-Carlo, Hong Kong (with one Michelin star), Mexico City, Cannes and Mykonos. ✨ NEW RESTAURANT REVIEW ✨ I have discovered a new way of dining out on a weekend in Dubai. I arrive at my chosen restaurant for an early cocktail, around 5.30pm pre-‘sunset’. I order one starter with a cocktail, a second appetiser with a glass of wine. And so on with main courses and dessert. Out by 9pm. I am coining this 'staggered dining.' Relaxing and fulfilling, both literally and mentally 😋. Perhaps I am getting old but I am not a fan of late nights 😉. That’s how my evening rolls at Luchador, a new rooftop Mexican cantina on the 11th floor of @aloftpalm – located on the wrong crescent for sunset, made up for by ocean views of both Burj towers. #Repost @foodiva ・・・ New opening @thefishhousedubai does exactly what it says on the tin, or in today’s world, the tin is social media. It’s not just about the view and the margaritas, but surprisingly, top marks for the food too 😋. Dinner last night at new Mexican rooftop restaurant Luchador atop @aloftpalm - more in my review soon. When I hear of restaurants as shisha spots, my enthusiasm fast diminishes - however new licensed Middle Eastern restaurant @ninivedubai at Emirates Towers impressed on many levels. On the terrace of La Cantine du Faubourg (same owner) with a Turkish chef. Does shisha tempt or deter you from a restaurant? More in my review soon. 🍴🍷 #foodivareviews #foodiva
Even though imported 'celebrity chef' restaurant concepts are fast diminishing in Dubai, a few are opening up including David Myers', aka the @gypsychef ’s two restaurants @basta_dubai and @bleublanc_dubai at the Renaissance Downtown hotel in Business Bay. It's worth noting that ALL his concepts are outside his US home turf, unlike other renowned chefs. Interestingly, @chefthomaskeller refuses to bring his signature concepts to Dubai because of lack of access to fresh ingredients and staff talent. Let's see if the French offering, Bleu Blanc, can pull it off. Guest contributor @jovelmei ’s review is now live – see link in profile. “That’s Dubai, eh…,” responds a manager to my statement that the menu at new chic Dubai beach club, @driftbeachdubai in the One & Only Royal Mirage is overpriced (minimum AED350 per person for three courses without alcohol). Well he does ask how our meal has fared. Shame as the food overall is decent classic Mediterranean fare. More in my review now live on FooDiva – see link in profile. The new al fresco Meraas development @lamerdubai has opened its first licensed restaurant 😋. @mastidubai which translates to "fun and mischief" is another new ‘Indian restaurant’ for this city, but don’t just expect a modern interpretation. The cuisine would be better described as fusion with strong Indian flavours. More in my review now live – see link in profile. A well-executed Neapolitan classic - spaghetti alle vongole in bianco at new snazzy beach club, @driftbeachdubai in the One & Only Royal Mirage for lunch yesterday 😋. No surprise given the chef is Maxime Le Van who specialises in Mediterranean dishes - you might recall him as the opening chef of Boca. Shame the pricing is so sky high though 🙁. Another new Indian restaurant opens in Dubai, @mastidubai This time with an innovative fusion-style menu, and a colourful Instagram-worthy interior. Blimey, are restaurants suddenly improving in Dubai for me to dish out a second consecutive 4.5 out of 5 knife rating?! Or am I becoming soft in my old age? 😉 My experience with Indian restaurants in Dubai are hit and miss. I love punchy flavour, but I can’t, or rather my stomach can’t tolerate high doses of chilli spice. Digestion issues aside, I feel that, a little like truffle, extreme spice overpowers the natural flavours of a dish, and in the case of chilli, sets your tongue on fire. So it’s a welcome change to dine in a new Indian restaurant here, @littlemissindiarestaurant at @fairmontthepalm , where the menu has no indication of spice levels 😋. Thank you @foodiva for such wonderful feedback. We look forward to welcoming you again soon! #Repost Dubai has its first traditional Japanese restaurant, @kohantei at @dubaiopera that embraces ‘omotenashi’ hospitality through a formal multi-course ‘kaiseki’ menu focused on beef from Japan. This particular experience from my travels in Japan is all about harmony and balance in cooking style, flavour and colour. Frankly, as all cooking should aspire to 😉. Interestingly, kaiseki is the forerunner to French nouvelle cuisine, and what we now consider fine dining. My review gives it a high 4.5 out of 5 FooDiva knife rating, which only three other restaurants in Dubai have ever scored 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼. See link in profile to read why 😋. Chef Sean Connolly you might ask, as did I…who is he? I only came across this Yorkshire expat when I ate in one of his Sydney restaurants, The Morrison, a no-frills gastro-pub and oyster bar last December. He’s made his name in New Zealand and Australia through five restaurants and endless telly work – but he’s not a world-recognised name. Looks like Le BHV Marais has partly taken note of @foodsheikh ’s review and the staff now know the location of @izubrasserie but there’s still no signage. The good news is, it’s well worth a visit 😋. He asks, are you happy to dine out on simple, comfort fare, or do you prefer to spend money on an unusual and innovative meal? Review live on www.foodiva.net (see link in profile) 😋🍴🍸🍷 #foodivareviews
A classic case study of a maiden dining journey that is ALL style and NO substance ☹️. My review of home-grown Chinese restaurant @maidenshanghaidubai at @viceroydubai raises the question of whether restaurants should invite guests for dinner in exchange for social media coverage BEFORE officially open? Would welcome your thoughts 😊. Now live on www.foodiva.net (see link in profile). My 📷shows the striking view from the rooftop terrace (all style 😉). 🍴🍜🍸 #foodivareviews
Hidden away through the back (and heart!) of house in Bur Dubai's Majestic Hotel is newly opened pan-Asian joint, @misswangdubai It's not going to win any awards for the food (this pad Thai was one of the better dishes), but it's cheap and cheerful...and licensed 😜. Dhs90 for any three dishes that are under Dhs50 each (that's the majority). Plus 50% happy hour on drinks until 9pm (Dhs20 for a decent glass of vino). The concept feels more like a bar (with a live band) than a restaurant. Excellent service. My tip; have dinner in one of my favourite haunts, Greek restaurant Elia in the same hotel, and head here for a nightcap. Do you have any hidden licensed gems? 🍴🍜🍷 #foodivareviews
Here we go again...another restaurant, @maidenshanghaidubai in the new @viceroydubai that is all style and no substance ☹️. Our dinner on Thursday started well with, what I reckon, is one of Dubai's most inspiring cocktail lists, and these moreish turnip puffs. Sadly all went down hill when our over priced Dhs200 main courses failed to arrive leaving us to eat egg fried rice and stir fried kai lan on their own. Half an hour and two complaints later, the staff finally acknowledge there's been a mistake. The mains eventually arrive (lacklustre, small portions and one of which a chicken dish hardly had any chicken). There's no dessert menu yet (why open then?!), but we are served two desserts on the house which clearly came straight from fridge to table. Towards the end, their customer service recovery finally kicked in with two team members including the manager apologising profusely, and the food, bar one dish, was waived off the bill. I can get much better and considerably cheaper food from a Chinese take-away. From what I can tell, it appears this is a classic case of owner pressure on the operators to open this restaurant despite the fact it isn't ready. It's clear from my Instagram feed that many have been invited to dine at Maiden Shanghai, raving about their experience. So this proves my strategy that only if you dine incognito is the experience an honest representation. Anyhow, rant over, for now. Question is, whether to review in detail on my site, given the food was waived? What do you think? 🍴🍸🍜 #foodivareviews
Peyote: a flirtation or a relationship with Mexican cuisine? No doubt the headline of this review will garner lots of spam 😉. Does Dubai finally have a high-end licensed restaurant that dishes up modern Mexican fare rather than Tex-Mex? 📷of a delicious char-grilled and salt-cured cactus salad 😋. Have you ever eaten cactus? My review now live on www.foodiva.net (see link in profile). Swipe for more photos. 🍴🍸🌵#foodivareviews @peyotedubai
Getting authentic Mexican cuisine with a modern spin (and an alcohol licence!) has always been a struggle in Dubai. Given my experience last night at London import @peyotedubai (replacing Wheeler's at DIFC) I think they may have struck gold. Admittedly, I was recognised on arrival, but, thankfully, I still paid the bill. Perhaps I should retire. 📷 of arroz a la tumbada, a traditional Mexican dish which simply described is a refined version of paella with lobster, crab and langoustine 😋. More in my review soon. What's your take on Mexican cuisine in Dubai? 🍴🌶🌮🥘🍸🍷 #foodivareviews
