- ‘Beneath this place’. It’s from probably my favourite folksong, The Cottagers Reply. About an old Cotswold man telling people from London why they can’t buy his old Cottage, how his family have, for generations, worked the land and they belong there in the soil itself. It was written a long time ago but is so relevant today. My favourite lines make me cry every time I listen to them... ‘Now they’re all gone, but as for me, the wild Hare still runs as free. And at dusk the Badger travels still, ancestral highways on the hill. I am as Cotswold bred as these, and I still need these fields and trees. And I need the soil that bore my race, and hold their bones beneath this place’ . 🌼 Sigh. Utterly perfect, and just about sums up my connection to the land here in Wiltshire. Do listen to the song if you can, Chris Wood does the definitive version. #badger #chriswood #folksong #cotswolds #goldensun #fullmoon #connection #ancestors #landscape #landlove #folkballad #hannahwillow #lyricsoftheland @twentytwentygallery
