I wrote this quote down after listening to Sophia Bush on #armchairexpert
(which btw if you don’t listen to that podcast it’s fab) and the last line hit me so hard. Sometimes it can be really easy to hurt yourself and to be cruel to yourself and to think lowly of yourself, especially when others aren’t treating you with kindness. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about why I’m not kind to myself, why I don’t think kind thoughts, why I don’t feel I deserve the love I show others. It’s been very eye opening to realize this pattern that’s been wired into my brain from such a young age to be my own harshest critic, but what for? What’s the point in being hard on ourselves? What do we accomplish when we wound ourselves by being so cruel to ourselves? You can usually look back at times in your life when someone else was hurting you and blame them for causing the personality changes/rewiring of your brain that you developed from those times, but taking responsibility for every version of myself regardless of how others were treating me is something that I think has been helping me heal. I’m responsible for what I put in my brain and in my body, and I’m trying to recognize that it doesn’t matter if other people hurt me because I don’t hurt myself anymore, and if I don’t hurt myself anymore it sort of feels like I’m taking away the power from others.
