. 🎬 This piece is actually really simple to make. The brass rings and geometric shapes make it well suited for a modern art deco styled room.

I have a ton of old leather scraps I’ve been given and want to use, so I started something new that should be a quick one. I always get a way better result when I take time to baste, even if it’s leather I’m working with. It was actually surprisingly easy to hand baste through the leather with the regular milliners needle that I like to use. I kept the stitches to a minimum and at the very edges, with the idea that the final machine stitching will cover the holes. The whole thing is backed with tear away to stabilize it. One thing I’d like to figure out for the future is a better way to hoop stuff like this. Like if you don’t want to risk a hoop mark over the leather? My largest hoops just don’t work that well. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
This piece woven with jeans wore by my son has sat patiently waiting for me...waiting for me to know the next steps toward completion. The idea came to me weeks ago but I’m just finding the time now to bring them to life. I’ve been stitching the pockets from the jeans to the rug. Seems appropriate as pockets act as temporary repositories for all the little valuables one doesn’t want to lose and this piece will act as a repository for my memories of his boyhood. Below I’ve added the thoughts I was working with as I wove the piece and I’ve added a pic of the piece on the loom. Happy Sunday to each of you. 💙
The weft that I’m weaving with is strips that I’ve torn from jeans that our thirteen year old son has outgrown or worn ragged. When I went through his closet at the end of summer, I was filled with so many emotions. Conflicting emotions. On one hand, we want our kids to grow up and become independent; at the same time, we want them to need us. As he prepares to enter high school, I’m creating this piece so that I can weave in all my uneasy feelings that this transition represents. For me, weaving helps synthesize my mixed emotions and the piece becomes the vessel to carry them, freeing me to move forward. 🙏
