Working on improving thoracic extension with Donald, a running back for the uOttawa GeeGees. . Thoracic extension is a movement that is lacking in athletes and the general population alike. As much as we hate it, day to day life has us sitting 💺more often than not. Studying ✏️, working 💻 or chilling with some TV 📺 while seated all contribute to kyphotic (rounded upper back) posture. . Kyphosis can lead directly to neck and shoulder pain, as well as indirectly to everywhere else down the kinetic chain. Pair this with forward head posture ➡️ from texting 📱and you can expect to be in a world of pain and dysfunction. More on this in a later post.

The counterbalance single-leg squat to bench is one of our favourite single-leg exercises. It’s a fantastic choice for improving relative leg strength and requires excellent balance, mobility and coordination.. . Why we love this exercise:. . 1. It’s not about pure strength. It requires a significant amount of hip, knee & ankle stability and mobility. 2. Identification of left and right leg strength discrepancies. It helps to make sure each leg is equally developed in strength and function compared to the other. 3. It teaches you how to load your hips & groove the hip hinge pattern. You have to be able to posteriorly shift your weight. 4. It minimizes the work load & stress on the joints when performed properly. 5. Fascial Stretch Therapy is a GAME CHANGER 🙌 . “FST” is a type of stretching that targets not only the muscles, but the fascia, the connective tissue that surrounds muscles, bones, and joints. FST also targets the entire joint and joint capsule, using traction to remove restrictions from movement and to stimulate lubrication. . A Fascial Stretch Therapist will gently pull and move the arms, legs, spine, and neck in a smooth motion through varying planes of movement. There is no pain, not even discomfort. Instead, the gentle movement is stimulating and relaxing at the same time. . We also use PNF (Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation) like Active Release Technique. ART is a bit more aggressive whereas FST is all about “Romancing” the nervous system. Sometimes we just have to adjust! 😝 In today’s workout my hands and wrists were extremely tight so by the time I got to my push-ups which were at the end of my workout every part of my body was screaming but my hands and wrists were killing me from gripping and stabilizing. I didn’t stop, I adjusted! 😃 Turned my push-ups into fist push-ups which would take the pressure off my wrists and when the full push-ups got to crazy I dropped to my knees. There is no shame in modifying or slowing down when your body really needs it. Little progress update: old sciatic nerve problems are slowly creeping in due to overall wear and tear. Lifting heavy 3x a week and 2 hour-long cardio sessions has built up a lot of tightness and soreness. Having to take an impromptu rest week to focus on recovery, massage balling, foam rolling and stretching. Depending on your training intensity, frequency and recovery. Regular deload or off-weeks are essential to maintain long-term performance and continue progressing; can’t keep functioning if you don’t listen to your body and rest when it needs it! In our Yin Training curriculum everything is structured to setup our Asana-Lab which is our in-depth practice study of each and every pose. Experience in the poses is the one and only way to understand Yin Yoga and be able to teach it safely. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I find it to be a fascinating time, creating a space for the other Yin-scientists to go inward and perform their experiments. Whenever I start a new training I also find myself reminiscing of the previous crew. We have a wonderful group of souls in our D.C. training that began this past weekend and I am reminded of all of the smiles and beautiful minds from Toronto this Summer, miss you guys :D⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Each immersion training we go to a local park or natural area to discuss the Tao Te Ching on one of the last days. I love how simply it brings everything full-circle after being inside all week everything expands into the outer world to dialogue about philosophy and the poetry of life. This is one of my favorite upper body movements: Side lying shoulder internal rotator. However, in the seated position, I can lengthen the pec major (and associated fascia) as both a shoulder rotator & shoulder adductor. All in multiple angles while stabilizing the shoulder blade. This is a must-do movement if you play tennis 🎾, love the bench press, or spend lots of time in front of a computer 💻. Dragonfly is one of my top 3 Yin asana for my personal practice. Not only do I like how it feels and its targets but I credit the pose with contributing to the rehabilitation of my knees (in addition to Tai Chi & Shaolin Kung Fu). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I've followed my heart to whatever it enjoys over the years and that has led to many mosh-pit and muddy Sunday casual football injuries back in the day. I know I know "how did you get from mosh-pits to teaching meditation?" , what can I say I love life's spectrum, but that's a story for another post. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So Dragonfly I have found gives a sweet juicy stretch to the inner thigh OVER the inner knees. This is unique due to its wide straight leg position. In our Yin Trainings we go over in detail the muscles and tissues effected by this pose as there are a few muscles/connective-tissues that cross from the upper leg and over the inner knee which has been critical to improving the strength and durability of my knees and there ability to provide support to lateral movements. I still can't do anything extreme but I don't have to worry like I used to that I would re-injure it. Don't think these practices are a quick fix though, it took me years to rehab my knees but I did it without spending a dime or having any surgeries. Sometimes all it takes is patience, persistence and listening to your body.
