The highlight of my entire trip was a tour of Palenque, village mainly inhabited by Afro-Colombians who are direct descendants of African slaves brought by Europeans during the colonization of the Americas. They have preserved their African traditions over the years, and even speak Palenqueros (mix of Bantu languages including Swahili) ayeee 🙌🏾 . . . . . .. . . . . #mindblown #blacklivesmatter #LetABlackManTeachBlackHistory #blackafricanhistory #experiencerealcartagena #alexrocha #wakandaforever #weareone #staywoke #theydontteachthisinschool #travel #blackvoyagers #sanbasiliodepalenque #colombia #palenque #mytravelcrush #blacktravelgram #proudafrican #cartagena #travelisthenewclub @blacktravelgram @mytravelcrush @blacktravelmovement @travelnoire @wegotoo @weworktotravel
Milan really enjoyed the history of the city and Chelsea LOVED the colorful walls and beautiful murals. . . The Mercado de Bazurto (Bazurto Market) 1/6: the local market is located about 30 minutes away from the city, a place where working class people do their grocery shopping. This is a place where most #afrocolombians in the city work. The market is also the place for deep cultural encounters, where you find music, food, customs, beliefs, and it depicts the way local people perceive the world around them.
Take a look at this couple, they had an amazing experience during their visit to Palenque with us. We are so glad they enjoyed the tour. #Repost @mycruisingfam with @get_repost ・・・ Our ship docked in Cartagena, Colombia on Saturday, October 20, 2018. Prior to our cruise, I contacted Alex Rocha, at Experience Real Cartagena, and we planned where we would meet. A bus of other visitors to Colombia met us at the port area for our tour to, through, and from Palenque. It was a pleasure to be welcomed to Palenque with open arms and to see and hear the expressions of joy from Palenque’s people. The level of pride in Palenque is strong, and the spirits and culture of the people we met in Palenque are indeed rich! That is a characteristic of the African Diaspora. It was truly a pleasure to tour Palenque with Alex, his family, and our fellow visitors to Colombia. We walked through a community as one big family with a history and culture that transcends language barriers. We saw a school in Palenque where the culture, history, traditions, and general subjects one expects to learn in school are taught. We admired murals and took photographs at a number of murals. We visited neighbors as we walked through Palenque, and we even tasted sweet treats one woman made in her backyard. We saw and participated in a Palenque dance performance. Getting out there and seeing communities many know nothing about, seeing God’s love there, and bringing God’s love… this is life! After a wonderful sit-down meal – my meal, in particular, was a delicious fried fish with some of the most delicious coconut rice I have tasted thus far, as well as plantains and vegetables, with a tall glass of refreshing lemonade – we boarded our tour bus, which took hubby and me to the cruise port. The extremely comfortable tour bus, the Medellin rum that we drank with Coca Cola, and the delicious lunch we shared in Colombia with Alex and his family was definitely a highlight of our trip! Palenque: In 2005, the village was declared Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Palenque is also considered the first free town in the Americas, where people still preserve their ancestral traditions and culture, like dances, spiritual rituals, language and music. ———- #africanculture #experiencerealcartagena #africanroots #africainamerica #palenque #sanbasiliodepalenque #firstfreetowninamericas #graffiti #graffitiart #africanheritage #culture
Meet Mr Rafael Cassiani, One of the greatest musicians from the village of Palenque in Cartagena Colombia. This man has travelled the world to many European, Asian and even to north, central and South American countries. Mr Cassiani is 85 years old and he’s still kicking it. He founded the music group Sexteto Tabalá, in which he takes the music of palenque to another level. Presenting and preserving his culture, with his drums, with his traditional music, with his dances and his amazing voice. Mr Rafael Cassiani has been honored by the Colombian government and other governments out there in the world. Congratulations Mr Cassiani, thank you for preserving the culture, the music, the African Heritage. ———- #afrocolombian #afrocolombianbusiness #supportafrocolombianbusinesses #supportblackbusiness #supportblackbusinesses #blackandproud #africanheritage #africandescent #africanroots #grafittiart #sanbasiliodepalenque #palenque #cartagenacolombia #experiencerealcartagena #africanculture

Mercado de Bazurto (Local Market). — This is a place outside of the touristic area where local people go and buy their food, like vegetables, fruits, and even clothes. This picture right here represents the side of the #RealCartagena , that is not shown on TV, but where the ‘Cartageneros’ work,do their groceries and eat #RealFood . #realcartagena #experiencerealcartagena #food #localmarket #cartagenadeindias #africanroots #flavorsandsabores #caribbeanfood #caribbeanflavor #freshfood #seafood
Today was another great tour; seeing the side of #Cartagena #Colombia that is not on any tourist “must-see” lists. #slowtravelingsoulsister #thatretirednomadlife #BlessedLife #Mondaymotivation Alex Rocha of @experiencerealcartagena took us to a square devoted to the wise words and beliefs of two great Afro-Colombian’s, through the local markets where we tasted the local fruit, and to the youth center (teaching English and technology) that he is building where the students performed music and dance routines. We also had an awesome lunch on the beach in a Level 1 (the poorest) neighborhood.
We will help you plan your travel experience to Cartagena, Colombia and you’ll be in great hands, with the Rocha family, while you’re there. #MyOpulentExperience #ExperienceRealCartagena #BlackTravelSupportGlobalEconomy #BlackWomenTravelersAreDope

The women of Palenque are stunning!
one of the highlights of the entire trip has been #TheRealCartagena tour with local “celebrity” #AlexRocha . the historic center of cartagena is a gorgeous, almost frozen in time part of the city, but outside the old city’s wall, there are major social economic issues, classism, corruption and extremely impoverished afro-colombian neighborhoods. it’s so easy to travel to a seemingly perfect city and turn a blind eye to how 40% of the country really lives. before you travel to colombia you’re always told to not go off onto the roads less travelled. this was an authentic experience that has truly changed the way i look at the world. we saw homes that were literally built from cardboard and scrap wood. many of these homes don’t have the most basic of amenities, like a front door. alex has dedicated his life to these barrios, the same ones in which he grew up and still lives in today. he has also been able to keep many of the community’s youth off the streets by teaching them history, social skills, languages, music and arts, and different outlets in finding jobs in the tourism industry. thank you for sharing your home, your experiences and your culture in the most honest way.
If you ever come to Cartagena you MUST do the Real Cartagena tour with Alex @experiencerealcartagena He is AWESOME, we had an amazing time learning about our brothers and sisters from Palenque!! #experiencerealcartagena #palenque #colombia

The Queen Has Spoken 🙅🏿🙅🏿🙅🏿 While in The San Basilio of Palenque, my wife learned the history of the African women who sought freedom and the importance of their hairstyles. They wore cornrolls to map out their path to freedom. Others styled their hair to hide seeds and other necessities they needed on their escape to freedom to San Basilio Palenque. Wraps are traditional African hair attire for women. My wife was honored to have her hair wrapped by a women of the Palenque Township. #Blackhair #Afrocolombiano #Theblackpassportclub #Livingiswhatwecallit #worldtravelers #travelingblack #blacklove #blackfamily #goals #road #ride #family #love #dmv #life #theblackpassportclub #thealstonbrothers #springbreak #colombia #southamerica #experiencerealcartagena #travelingblack #travelingfamily #blacktravelfeed #blackgirlsrock #blackgirls #blackgirlsaremagic #worldtravelers #learnsomethingneweveryday
We enjoyed taking our boys to experience the people and culture of The San Basilio Palenque. A township founded by an enslaved son of a King, Benkos Biohos in the early 1800’s. Benkos Biohos lead what we Americans refer to as, an Underground Railroad for hundreds of enslaved Africans in Cartagena. He initially took several men, women and children during his first escape to freedom, 50 miles outside of Cartagena. Over the years, he organized the free men and women to free other enslaved Africans and to protect their new township, The San Basilio Palenque. He became the King of this Freeman’s land. Though the colonizers government tried to infiltrate and take over the township, several times, they were not successful because of Benkos Biohos leadership he acquired during his training to be king. After not being able to take over Benkos land, the government made a deal with Benkos to stop freeing slaves and stop allowing the freemen to call him king and he will be granted the rights to his town ship. Though he hesitated, he later agreed. About 14 years later, Benkos entered Cartagena, without any protection of his guards or weapons. The government seized and killed Benkos Bioho in the city or Cartagena. I encourage you to learn more about Benkos Biohos and Afro-Colombian History. During our trip, we were honored to visit this free land and experience traditional dance, language and culture. The San Basilio Palenque is still an independent land not supported by Cartagena. They have their own way of life. I visited the Pallenque village which is an hour outside of Cartagena and home to the descendants of African slaves that were freed in 1872. They Grow corn, fruits and vegetables in order to provide for their families and The women go into Cartagena and sell fruit and candy to bring money back to the village. They have been abandoned by the Columbian government and are left to take care of themselves with little to no resources. I was honored to be invited into their village to learn more about them and to pass it on to others. I never thought I would go to Cartagena and learn so much African History. My tour guide was amazing @experiencerealcartagena and I look forward to learning more about African culture when I visit Baru island. Out of respect for the locals I did not take many pictures of them but that particular man was excited to take a pic with me... I felt so at home and so welcomed. There was a language barrier but my guide let the people of Pallenque know we were thankful to be there and they let us know how excited they were to see people who look like them want to visit their home. #blacktravelmovement #experiencerealcartagena #Epicbirthdaycelebrations #iammyhistory #worldtravelers
And this right here is the "View of Disparity" in Cartagena... Apparently Cartagena is divided by Economics from Level 1 (Poor) to Level 6(wealthy) and 60% of the Population live in Levels 1 & 2... and guess what... about 60% of the population identifies as Afro-Colombian...🤔 If you look at my last pics that's the view of Level 6 with beautiful high rises in BocaGrande area... Definitely a big difference in the skyline... This trip I got to venture out of the tourist area... Thanks to my Cartagena Travel Fam showing us the Real Cartagena... #ThisIsCartagena #Colombia #Cartagena #ExperienceRealCartagena
