(I tried for ages to figure out how to flip this image so the text wasn’t backwards, but I’m exhausted and couldn’t figure it out! This is gonna be a long post, but bear with me because I care a lot about it.)
Today I wrapped up my first ever freediving course with @evolvefreediving.
Also I bought 2 shirts because 1.) they are super soft; 2.) I can wear them over the honestly impressive sunburn I got on my chest/shoulders/back/arms; and 3.) because it’s a more direct way to support what Ashley and Ren Chapman (the wonders behind Evolve Freediving) are doing. Ashley holds 3 world records and 14 national records in freediving; Ren is one of the top safety coordinators for the sport in the world. Folks, these guys know what they’re talking about, and taking a class with them was one of the best things I could have done to expand my knowledge of water sports. Thanks to their incredible tutelage, I maxed out the class’s dynamic and static apnea goals: a 66’/20m dive, and a 4:00 static breath hold. I tried not to have any expectations going into the class because I wanted to use the skills I learned to do better mermaid photography and whatnot, but I’m thrilled by the sport by itself and I’m sure this won’t be the last class I take with Ashley and Ren. .
The most important thing I learned this weekend was to never dive alone. On top of that I learned several safety skills to make sure that my buddy and I get on the boat and go home from our dives, and that’s really why I wanted to take a real class: I wanted to learn to freedive SAFELY. And thanks to these rockstars, I have that under my belt. And I’m so surprised at myself and what I did - what I can do - what I will do; I’m so grateful that folks like the Chapmans exist to spread their knowledge of freediving to folks like me; I’m so excited to see where the next chapter of my freediving journey will take me - where life will take me. And if you read all this, I’m thankful for that, too!
