Just posted this poll on Facebook a moment ago. I am curious to see how it plays out. I am not sure how I would answer personally.
On one hand, I can see how English would be hard to learn. Our grammar rules have so many exceptions, the alphabet has difficult letters (the "th" and "r" letters specifically), and we read the same words differently based on context. For example, look at these two sentences.
1. I will read a book.
2. Yesterday I read a book.
The word "read" is spelled identically, but pronounced differently. How confusing is that?!?!? The worst part is that there are countless words like this. "Read" is not the only one.
Our spelling also makes no sense. Why do we write "knight" with a silent k, g, and h? Why do we not pronounce "Wednesday" as "Wed Ness Day"? SO CONFUSING!
On the other hand, English has some simple elements too. For example, unlike so many other languages we have no genders! In my mother tongue (Gujarati) all objects are either male, female, or neutral. In English, this concept does not exist.
Additionally, English does not have tones. According to one of my university lectures, around 40-60% of word languages have tones in them. I guess English is lucky not to have any.
Lastly, there are COUNTLESS resources to learn English seeing as it is such a prevalent language in the world. This makes it simpler to learn because you never need to waste time searching for ways to learn it.
All in all, I am undecided on how I would respond to this question :S #blog #languages #polyglot #englishishard #englishiseasy #survey #learnenglish #languagenerd #microblog #blogger
