The common misconception of fat storage is a misunderstanding of a process in the body known as de novo lipogenesis (DNL). This is the enzymatic pathway for the conversion of dietary carbohydrates into fat. While it is common belief that this process happens almost arbitrarily, several research papers have shown this not to be the case. I just had a fantastic conversation with an elite endurance coach who works alongside the AIS. We didn’t agree on everything we spoke about but we calmly listened to each other’s points and then responded after considering one another’s information. At the end, we both offered tips on how to help each other’s training, shook hands and commented on the quality conversation. The point is; there were no insults, no raising of voices and no aggression. The fact that we didn’t agree on everything only added to the quality of the conversation. . . Organic foods have their benefits. No one can, or is denying that. They taste better, they tend to last longer, and they often appear to have a richer colour, however recent research has found changes in the nutrients from commercially cultivated foods to organic to be statistically negligible and therefore; no better or worse for our longterm health. What does this mean? Well, while the studies did show a slight increase in micro-nutrients such as certain vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, these increases were not seen to be of a significant level that they would either benefit or detriment an individual’s health. This index can often be misleading for healthy individuals as the measurement is done after a period of fasting and without any other foods sources. Ie. a bowl of rice containing 50g of carbohydrates was consumed alone without any other foods. Then, blood sugar was measured intermittently across a two hour period compared against glucose (GI of 100). I don’t know about you, but I don’t recall ever eating a bowl of rice on it’s own. It has always been consumed alongside a protein, fat or combination meal. This will always alter a foods GI. . . A much better measurement is to utilise the Glycemic Load. This is a measure of how much glucose you are consuming across a given period and will remain constant when consumed along with other foods in a more typical fashion. . . . NOTE: it’s important to note that the above statement is applicable to healthy individuals only. Collectively, how our body uses its daily energy requirements is known as the Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE). The largest portion of the energy requirement comes from our Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR). This is where our basic functions operate; breathing, pumping blood, neurological functions etc. As a generalisation, this is where as much as 70% of our required energy each day is consumed. Next, you find the Thermic Effect of Feeding (TEF), where energy is required for our body to digest, assimilate & expel the food we eat. The TEF can vary depending on food choice. Proteins have the highest TEF with 20-30% of the consumed calories being used for digestive processes. Carbs & fats require the much lower energy output of only 5-15%. The ranges vary for each macro-nutrient depending on food choices & whether mixed with other macro-nutrients (as a typical meal would be). The RMR & TEF make up the sub-category of Resting Energy Expenditure (REE), meaning your daily activity has very little impact on their values. Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT) is next & incorporates your daily activity outside of specific exercise. This could be a general movement to involuntary fidgeting. NEAT has one of the largest ranges as it can make up as much as 15% of a person’s energy requirements, however, is greatly dependant on the individual & their lifestyle. Research has demonstrated the importance of increasing a person’s NEAT as a long-term indicator for weight management. The final energy expense comes from direct exercise / activity. This is known as Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (EAT) & can also be a highly variable value, depending on an individual’s exercise level. Typically, EAT accounts for 10-15% of energy requirements. NEAT & EAT make up the Non-Resting Energy Expenditure sub-category & are directly impacted by both direct & indirect movement through the day. These four components make up our TDEE. If we consume a surplus to this, our bodies will typically begin to store fuel in the form of body fat. less than this, our bodies will be required to breakdown energy rich tissue, most commonly body fat, in order to fuel our output.

I remember when one bite of a 🧁 or ANYTHING SWEET would lead to a complete binge on everything in the kitchen. I felt like I had no control and couldn’t stop eating until I felt sick or there was no food left. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This behavior/habit was developed over years of dieting and restricting foods. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Because contrary to what we might expect, restrained eaters (DIETERS) actually DO NOT EAT LESS then people who don’t restrict their food. (More on the science behind this in my IG story today). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And dieters experience decreased pleasure in eating and could lead to feelings of failure, greater levels of anxiety, depression, and reduced self-esteem. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 👆🏼Yup that pretty much summed me up in the past! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🙌🏼Now I can eat a bite of a cupcake feel satisfied and stop. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ HOW? I needed a plan to evolve from where I was then to where I wanted to be with my relationship with food and my body. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I tried to do it on my own, but I absolutely needed accountability and support because the truth is, the cycles we get into with food become wired into our brains. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Our brain literally starts to form habit pathways that put our tendencies with food on auto-pilot. And that is why you may sometimes feel like the struggle with food is wired into your DNA.
