Oh jeez there's a lot to talk about here. Y'all are probably sick of my #steranko
posts at this point, and you're wondering what else I am reading or you've given my comic book reading the appropriate amount of thought: none.
Anyhow, moment-to-moment and cinematographic transitions are a particular feature of #jimsteranko
as a writer and illustrator on the #nickfury
and shield work. The first few panels are nice examples of that aesthetic.
The next two panels are, I believe, setting mood rather than showing direct action. #scottmcloud
identifies this kind of transition as subject-to-subject in which deductive reasoning is used by the reader to combine the disparately presented images into a contiguous narrative. Moment-to-moment and subject-to-subject transitions are frequent in Japanese comics and less prevalent in American #silveragecomics
inspired by the work of the king: #Jackkirby
not Elvis, you jerk!
Next, we get into some serious chase scene madness handled absolutely brilliantly in terms of color, layout, and especially graphic #markmaking
. The undulating black like pioneered by #Kirby
functions to denote the shiny slickness of the #porsche
, the physical excitement and leather of sgt fury, the rain on the road, and serves as an abstract compositional tool for directing us across the page.
The bottom left and top right panels mirror one another, with the inset image of sgt. fury reiterated as reflection in the mirror. See my upcoming #raphreadscomics
posts for the direct inspiration in #fourcolorfear
reprints from #echorror #colorama
being the name of story.
Finally, the wild diagonals and complementary color relationships I. The bottom of the right page set off the action like a bomb. Rather than using direct action-to-action cuts like Kirby would have, a series of disjointed views of nick in action with the car in the background. Steranko is unconcerned with the physical space being "real" that his characters and scenes occupy. Instead, he pushes forward a dynamic and quite design heavy vision of composition.
Phew! Props/apologies if you read this whole post.
