Adrienne Barbeau vs a frozen octogenarian and Harvey Keitel versus a cat!
The zombie marathon continues with two evil eyes!
I'm going to give a quick overview of two evil eyes. Even though I plan on focusing on the Romeros primarily, this film deserves more.
Two evil eyes is something of an oddity. It is two separate one-hour films directed by Dario Argento and George Romero respectively. Both short films are based on stories by Edgar Allan Poe. This movie features a very impressive cast of genre regulars including EG Marshall, Tom Atkin, Adrienne Barbeau, Harvey Keitel, and Julie Benz - whose voice is dubbed over by none other than Asia Argento for the film - among others.
The special effects are also impressively done by frequent contributor collaborator with both Argento and Romero, Tom savini. Savini also has a cameo in argento's segment of the film. Although not a classic on either filmography, this film works well for both directors, albeit in different ways. For Romero it shows how effective a director he can be outside of the zombie genre he he created( and later was somewhat trapped by) and is best known for. For Argento however this movie serves as perhaps his last stab at the technical brilliance that once seemingly came so easily.
This film showcases to amazing directors, both past their Prime, both seemingly energized by the project.
Back to zombies!
Romero's contribution is the facts in the case of M Valdemir. It's a simple barebones chamber piece. Exceedingly limited cast. This might as well been a deleted story from Creepshow or old story from EC Comics they forgot to run. Adrienne Barbeau serves as a gold digger whom gets her comeuppance, alongside the crooked doctor whom she conspired against her ailing, elderly and exceedingly wealthy husband. Things go as you would expect in a Romero film. I've always been a big fan of this, effects and all, even if Romero himself was not a fan of how the last sequence played out. More than anything these 60 minutes just makes me miss Romero.
Long live the king
