Brunch at @cantinafeliz.
Drove up to hunt down this stack and figured I'd try the hand of the Feliz family mothership at real Mexican cuisine while at it. To be honest, my expectations were low: commercial watered down ethnic flavors. Heck no though! These dishes were legit 👌
The Enchiladas Mixtos took me for a ride. Each one distinct with coherent execution. My palate opened up to a zesty green chili/tomatillo sauce providing pop for sizable pieces of shrimp and crab cooked to a pleasantly firm texture. A homey chili style (black beans) sauce paired with tender brisket slices and put you in a joyful backyard bbq mindset. Which then transitioned to comforting salsa ranchera and smokey chipotle crema notes in chicken enchilada. Cheese, as well as, and earthy rainbow chard made occasional appearances for complexity. Served on a scalding hot plate, they maintained optimal temperature throughout.
An auspicious start was followed by these visually striking Churro Pancakes. Fortunately, eating them was even more fun than just looking at them (drooling). Subtly cinnamon spiced moist pancakes with good lift topped with large plantain chunks sauteed to a velvety jammy consistency. Plantains' savory tropical notes balanced the darker cajeta caramel topping. A Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal garnish provides welcome textural variety. If the pancakes had better crisping, inherent buttery + buttermilk flavors, and used actual sugary churro pieces instead of cereal, it'd be a legendary stack. As is, still excellent.
Feliz family of establishments (Calaca Feliz was also great) are strongest in savory offerings, but overall they have very few weak spots. Prices and service 👍 so overall: Recommended.
