I believe young people have the power to change the world. It’s why I started @perfectworldfdn
, to give kids the opportunity, tools and voice to make change.
When I saw the video (which I will not repost) of those young white men berating, intimidating and disrespecting #NathanPhillips
and a small group of Native Americans from the Indigenous Peoples March, my heart sank for so many reasons.
1 - these young people have LOST THEIR WAY. They do not hear the ancestors as Nathan does, nor are they even aware of what they’re missing. The connection to higher things, to decency, to tradition, to respect for elders... it’s all lost on them.
2 - these boys did not come out of nowhere. They’ve been groomed and raised in an environment that supports this rhetoric and behavior.
3 - there MUST HAVE BEEN adult chaperones standing around doing NOTHING while this was going on. SHAME on all them.
4 - all of this is another indication of how the current vibration of this country is so OFF that these boys found JOY in THIS. As Nathan said, with so much poise and grace, if ONLY they’d use that energy for helping to lift up others. What a different country we’d live in. Instead, future Kavanaughs are being raised up to believe that their privilege is a pass.
To those saying that we need to teach these kids about tolerance... there is NOTHING INTOLERABLE ABOUT INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OR ANY PEOPLE OF COLOR. What IS intolerable is this kind of behavior that is co-signed and even encouraged by so many, all the way up to the WH.
BUT - I am also encouraged because this is another opportunity to fortify ourselves for meaningful change. All of it is. Nathan is leading by example, not only with his poise but also with his work with the #nativeyouthallince
So, I say to you. Find a kid. Listen to them. REALLY listen. Mentor them. Tell them they’re powerful. Tell them that their power can go one way or another. Show them ways to do good in their community. Guide them. We must guide them. #eachoneteachone #iamnotintolerable
