- “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Nelson Mandela.
If you strip back how you arrived where you are, in the same breath can you see how societies complexities muddled into the educational system is leaving people behind? Does it build all children up? How was multi-ethnic excellence taught at your school and who were your role models that empowered you to realize that (your/others) diversity matters and encompassed the true meaning of inclusivity and equal opportunity, free of racism, prejudice, marginalization and conscious/ un-conscious bias? .
The National curriculum is a major cog in the shaping of our children’s identity. Yet it does not acknowledge the true story behind the racial diversity of its pupils, or positively reinforce multi-ethnic success or celebrate and teach about the history and accomplishments of people of multi-ethnicities. This two fold damaging effect, empowering white superiority and widens the racial attainment gap.
Regardless of parental educational level it is crucial to emotionally invest in our children’s education and drive the aspiration to give their child the best chance to achieve.
Julia Kibela invited me to talk to the children about medicine at @iamschoolofexcellence
and in her Saturday school is doing just that. The children were buzzing and so was I learning about Afro-Caribbean excellence amiss from their schooling. A powerful session on African Religion and Gods in different African cultures. She is a Mum, teacher and head of year. I took away a lot of inspiration from her and the engaging and questioning children asking me lots of meaningful questions, practical, curious and wanting to know cure for diseases like cancer.
