The refined #bust
of St. Irene, in melted #silver
and masterfully chiseled by Carlo #Schisano
(1733), presents the right hand stretched to block the arrows which stick in the palm of the hand, while on the left there is a putto which supports a fantasy reproduction of the city of #Naples
, where you can distinguish the bell tower of Carmine, Castel Sant'Elmo and the Maschio Angioino.
Sant'Irene is the second Patron Saint of Naples since 1760, invoked to protect the city from the calamities coming from the sky. For this great work, Schisano was paid 2231 ducats and ... If we wanted to make a sort of comparison, today a duchy would be worth around 17 euros. So in total he got 37.927 euros to create a masterpiece which nowadays – like other pieces of the Treasure of San Gennaro – is priceless!
