The Bern–Lötschberg–Simplon railway (BLS) operates a network of what we lovingly call "snail trains". They go along picturesque routes at a rather slow pace, deliberately stopping at all those tiny rural villages you didn't even know existed.
While walking home through Luzern on an intentionally random detour, I spotted one of the BLS trains parked on a siding. Apparently, I wasn't the only one getting sidetracked - this seemed like the perfect opportunity to finally sketch a BLS train. As soon as I started, the train lights went on so I drew as fast as possible to capture the train before it rolled away - which it dutifully did a couple minutes later.
This particular line connects Luzern and Bern via Langnau. Back in 2016, I used that train as a mobile art studio, sketching more than 1000 portraits of fellow passengers en route from Luzern to Wolhusen where I would get off and hop on the train coming from the opposite direction, headed right back to Luzern. On some days, I made half a dozen round trips or more, getting one or two sketches done in each direction. After harvesting the same train line for a year, I had sketched some of the regular passengers three or four times and - on the odd occasion - the same person twice in a day.
But this is the very first time I've sketched one of the BLS trains from outside. A guy passing by proudly commented that he always rides the BLS train without buying a ticket. I have no idea how he manages to elude the train conductors who diligently check everyone's tickets on practically every ride. But that's none of my concern, my mission entailed capturing all the souls riding the train, and in this case the train itself.
