"Sex Education" - Season 1 from the year 2019
(8 episodes, comedy drama)
Socially awkward high school student Otis may not have much experience in the lovemaking department, but he gets good guidance on the topic through living with mom Jean, who is a sex therapist. When his classmates learn about his home life, he teams with whip-smart bad girl Maeve to set up an underground sex therapy clinic to deal with their classmates' problems.
Originally I was not going to watch this show. The trailer looked only okay and the cast was not especially interesting. I also excepted a lot of cringe humour, which is something I cannot stand. But because I like Gillian Anderson, who is playing Otis' mother, I decided to watch the first episode. And 8 hours later I finished the series.
This show is really good!
The story is not cringy at all, the characters are complex and have well-written archs and it tackles surprisingly deep subject.
Otis is a good protagonist and is well played by Asa Butterfield. His interaction with all characters seem so realistic and his character is investing.
Maeve and Eric also have great subplots. At the beginning I thought I might find these plot boring, but I didn't and cried a surprising amount.
I wished they would have showed more of the therapy sessions that Otis conducts, but maybe that's just the psychology student in me.
I would definitely watch a second season!
All in all, I would recommend this show to people who want to watch a teen comedy drama centered around sex.
