How often are you pushing towards a goal or finish line & you hit a speed bump that derails your momentum. How do you respond?
I used to cruise along at a good clip towards a goal, I would hit a speed bump, get derailed and just stop. It felt like failure was it, I messed up. I wasn't going to be able regain the momentum & honestly, maybe I shouldn't have even tried to reach for a goal like this anyway.
It took some really significant setbacks stacked on top of each other for me to see what I was doing to myself and my relationships. It also made me realize that I had zero professional resilience. I felt like in my life, I had overcome some big setback personally, my divorce or being asked to resign from a company I helped build.
What was the difference? It was confidence...or lack thereof. I was doing well in my job and things in my personal projects were more complex and bigger ideas. When your confidence is low, trying to do anything difficult seems almost impossible. That is where I was.
How did I overcome and rebuild my confidence? I started small, I started keeping promises to myself. Really small promises. Instead of setting promises in completed work or projects, I started making promises to myself that I will work on X project tonight for one hour and spend X hours with Amy and the kids and I will stop working at X time to get a certain amount of sleep.
By keeping those promises to myself and following through, I was able to build accountability, confidence and consistency. I am still not perfect, I still derail, but when I get down, I go back to making small promises, finding ways to refocus on the setback at hand. That focus allows me to regain my momentum and get back on track.
If you are struggling with rebuilding confidence, try making small promises to yourself and keeping them. Every. Single. Time. Have a fantastic #humpday
