Tuesday: Say '#YES
Find a way to say yes to things. As Anais Nin once said, “Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's #courage
.” So begin saying yes to invitations to a new country, say yes to meet new friends, say yes to learn something new. Yes is how you get your first job, and your next job, and your spouse, and even your kids... Here are 5 reasons to say YES more often:
1. You block the potential miracle if you don't - Opportunity sometimes knocks gently and does not wait for perfect timing. The truth is - there is no perfect timing!
2. Someone believes in you - To have the option of saying yes, someone or something believes you can do achieve something. All accomplishments start with a decision to try first.
3. Opportunities do not always arise again - Life & luck favor the bold. Sometimes when making a decision and considering both outcomes, the "no" outcome is connected to regret somehow. Regret is sometimes the biggest risk of all.
4. It attracts positivity - The word itself is inviting and empowering. It’s essentially saying, "World, I got this!"
5. Life is short. Ask not why, but why not? Chase your curiosity, for it will only lead you to more invaluable experiences. Steve Jobs sums this well, "Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life." A new perspective helps us abandon our fears - It ultimately helps us grow both intellectually & spiritually. 💡💭⏳
CLOSE OF DAY: It was decided to go on the west side of the island to scout out the direction of the sunset. Thomas had a few lists of his own for our trip, which included time-lapse photos of the sunset. Our stomachs stopped us in Lahaina. Dinner was at Lu Lu's Lahaina Surf Club & Grill. Inside, the décor was a surf theme with surfboards mounted on walls and large opened windows that created and indoors/outdoors experience. Smack dab in the center was a large bar with at 4 flat screen tvs. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
While we waited for our food, the tvs with the NBA playoff had everyone’s attention. It was strange to be able to watch this in the middle of the day. I knew at home on the east coast, there were millions of tired eyes watching at the same time we were eating an early lunch/dinner. I haven’t watched NBA basketball in a while but it was pretty exciting. Since the windows were opened, there were a few guys sitting at the tables outside that were stationed with their heads in the windows hooting and hollering. It didn’t take long to finish our food but we hung around a bit for the game.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It was getting closer to sunset time and we needed to get an answer on which side of the island is best for sunsets. In typical random fashion we find ourselves driving a little ways and pulling over on the side of the road at a place where other cars were also pulling in and out. At that particular spot, there were no barriers between the cars and ocean. The sun was in full view as it started to settle on the handful of boats anchored for the night. Both the cumulous clouds and ocean were rushing in. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

FYI - when teachers expect their poc students to be spokespersons / cultural ambassadors for their people (key word = expect; inviting is different), it others the student & communicates he/she is not as American & is a foreigner (& its a microaggression).
BUT... that doesn't mean teachers should never ask about students' backgrounds or invite them to share their heritages with their classes. It's a fine line.

Since my last update about the NASP EXPOSURE PROJECT on Saturday, Thomas Schanding and Amy Balmanno have been quite busy presenting to high school students and undergraduates about school psychology: 51 undergraduates at the University of Houston—Clear Lake (TX) and 145 students at Central High School—East Campus in Fresno, California! Wow! I'm only on chapter 9 and I'm highly recommending this book... This is one of the most honest depictions of the hypocritical Evangelical Christian families that I've read.
This book leaves me even more grateful of being raised by such a loving mother despite the odds we faced. Man! I feel so sorry for the kid in this memoir 😓.
