! Day 22: Favorite Author
Stephen King. His first book, Carrie (1974) was made into a movie starring John Travolta in 1976. Well - John had a role in it anyway. Huge success. By the time The Stand rolled around in 1978 he'd published numerous short stories but only two other novels (Salem's Lot and The Shining). As indicated in my previous post, it was edited down from over 1100 pages to 823. But he kept putting out hit after hit. The Dead Zone. Firestarter. Cujo. Christine. Pet Sematary. In 1984 he co-authored my second favorite novel, The Talisman, with Peter Straub (Ghost Story), Misery... and the list goes on and on. .
King has written 58 novels, 10 collections (including Different Seasons - where Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption can be found), 5 non fiction (including a must have for all writers - On Writing) and 13 'others' (the Creepshow comic, Storm of the Century screenplay). .
One of the reasons why I love King's writing is because he seems to know human nature. I've learned a lot about people and how they act from reading his novels. And he also knows how to dig into your deepest fears and use them against you. I really did have to read The Shining with the lights on (I was about 14 at the time). When someone you care about dies - you feel it. Some are almost unbearable. But you feel. You know you are alive. .
If you have never read a Stephen King story - I suggest starting with The Mist. It's about 100 pages long and can be found in his collection titled 'Skelton Crew'. .
