Years after losing their daughter in a car accident, a dollmaker and his wife make their house available to a group of orphans. One of the girls, Janice, starts to notice strange things happening in the house, all seemingly related to a creepy doll.
Annabelle: Creation is the prequel to Annabelle which was itself the prequel/spinoff to The Conjuring. "Rudimentary" would be a great word to sum up this film because it brings all the expected genre tropes and not much else. Theres a spooky old house, a strange doll, creepy kids and (of course) loud jumpscares. Its the same stuff we've seen in a thousand other movies.
What did I like? The two main actresses, Talitha Bateman and Lulu Wilson, did a very good job with what they are given. There are also a couple of creepy moments and visuals throughout and I did like how the film tied into the first Annabelle at the end.
The worst thing about this film is that it feels forgettable. Besides the two main girls there are no memorable characters because none of them were given any development.
Parts of the story didn't seem to make sense and some scenes felt very repetitive because they always followed the same build up. This got a little tedious, which isn't good for a movie that wants to be scary.
I can't say the movie was boring since there were some effective scenes, but that's really the minimal a movie like this has to pull off.
With more originality Annabelle: Creation might actually have been good, but as it stands it's just "meh". The film wasn't terrible and it will likely entertain fans of the Conjuring universe, but otherwise it's a really forgettable experience.
