Where does he hide those wonderful toys? In the utility belt, of course! The belt went unmentioned in Detective #27 yet made its proper debut in 1939’s Detective Comics #29 (written by Gardner Fox with art by Bob Kane). The belt has been an essential piece of the dynamic duo’s arsenal ever since in both the comics and other assorted media Bat-iterations. In the ‘60s show, Batman communicated through the Bat-communicator in the belt’s front and infamously used his shark-repellent Bat-spray on a poor unsuspecting shark. In the Super Friends cartoon, Bats also used the same communicator while also constantly pulling other surprises from his belt. In the film Batman and Robin, Bat-Clooney uses his Bat-Credit Card (which wasn’t even in Akiva Goldsman’s script. We have Joel Schumacher to thank for that probably). And something I was surprised to find out was that Frank Miller introduced the pouch-laden utility belt in The Dark Knight Returns. After the introduction of the pouches, they were used in Batman: Year One and in the Legends of the Dark Knight series.
