“I, Tonya” is a roller coaster retelling of the American sports scandal that not only shook the very foundations of Figure Skating, but staggered the world with one act of raw violence, involving Olympians Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan; the latter of who was bludgeoned with a police baton to her knee, and leading the infamous scene of her screaming “Why? Why? Why?!” while being carried out of practice at the Cobo Arena in Detroit by her father, Daniel. According to FBI investigation and testimony, Harding’s former husband then known as Jeff Gillooly, had hired an assailant to attack Kerrigan and thereby increasing Harding’s chances of making the Olympic Team. Kerrigan recovered with only bruises to her leg to go on and take the Bronze in the 1994 Winter Olympics in Norway, leaving Harding with technical (and presumably emotional) issues at 8th place. She later was tried and pleaded guilty to hindering the prosecution and was banned from competition for life plus multiple fines.
Throughout high school, watching this drama unfold, fourteen years after all has been practically forgotten; director Craig Gillespie and screenwriter Steven Rogers take this to the other side bringing it all back. Tonya is now an antihero, as brilliantly co-produced and portrayed by renowned Australian actor and filmmaker Margot Robbie; with an excellent ensemble including multi awarded Allison Janey as her mother LaVona Golden and Gilloley played by Sebastian Stan who most of you recognize as “Bucky Barnes” in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The production manages to infuse drama with pitch black comedy, sharp dialogue and a story, told from the darker side; the abuse Harding allegedly endured by her mother and ex-husband, the sheer pressure that hindered her incredible strength and talent and reduced her into a lesson against hatred. “I, Tonya”, taken from various narratives and a fair perspective takes a look at you, this time. Who do you believe? 9/10 “I, Tonya” is now available on streaming and on DVD.
