guys! I’ve definitely been taking it easy and enjoying the nice cool breeze that is coming through my windows. Nothing like the smell of #fall
The other day I was told a story about Miss America 1980. A story about how positive affirmations can change the trajectory of our lives. Whether they are spoken to you from another or within yourself, they can influence the lens in which you see the world around you.
Her name was Cheryl Prewitt and she was from a small town in Mississippi. Most days she would spend her time at her fathers local grocery store. She was often there to greet the milkman who almost daily would show up to deliver their goods and ask 4 year old Cheryl, "how is my little miss america today?"
At first it was a bashful statement. One she would blush at and shrug off. But as he kept calling her "my little miss america" throughout their time spent together, it became more than a statement. It evolved from a simple interaction into a childhood dream to ultimately a goal that one day she would become Miss America.
And lo and behold, 17 years later, Cheryl walked the runway in Atlantic City to be crowned Miss America 1980.
Although many of us (majority of us) will not go on to win Miss America, there is such power in Cheryl's story. There is such power in the idea that words can define us. Words that are spoken to us and within us. They can change the way we see ourselves and the way we see others.
The way you speak about others will influence the way they speak about themselves. If you see good in them, speak it. If you see strength in them, speak it. If you see opportunity in them, speak it. And do the same for yourself. Positive affirmation can only go as far out as it goes within. Speak proudly of yourself when you look in the mirror. Speak optimistic of yourself when you come up short. Speak highly of yourself when you feel mundane. For the more you remind yourself and others of the good they have inside of them, the more we all will believe it.
Imagine if the milkman never called her "my little miss america."
About an hour after the downpour, the sun came out a little and it warmed up to the high seventies.
Nice. But thunderstorms tomorrow.
