Like the previous post, I will explain why I like this moment.
When it comes to origin stories for characters, usually you either get a separate miniseries from the publisher, or the writer will dedicate an entire arc for an origin story. Some good examples of the former option are Batman Year One, Superman: Secret Origins, Green Arrow Year One, Books of Doom etc. Some examples of the latter option are the Solve Everything arc from Hickman's F4 run where he explains the backstory for the Council of Reeds, Scott Snyder's Court of Owls arc, etc.
Mike Mignola detracts from this norm. Instead of giving us a miniseries or dedicating an entire story arc for an origin story, he instead makes it a mystery and gives us bits and pieces of information incentivizing us to keep reading. We the reader get little bouts of revelation everytime Mignola expounds on Hellboy's occult origins and what's better he weaves it into the main series plot\narrative. So while it serves as a part of the origin story, it still is part of the narrative. And there's one thing I've noticed as of late, when it comes to origin stories, fans want it simple and quick as possible with little complexities. Mignola gives us an interesting origin story spread out across the main series so we don't have to suffer thru a 4 issue mini series or an entire arc that detracts from the main plot all immersed in very interesting lore that can be learned about in other various Mignolaverse titles\series.
