Do you know that chronic stress is the most common type of stress that we face in our modern world? Where acute stress is high-intensity for the short term, chronic stress is low-intensity but long-term.
The problem is that our nervous system was built mainly to face short-term stressors like hunting for food or fleeing predators. The type of stress we experience today is more chronic in nature, preventing our bodies from returning to their default parasympathetic mode that facilitates proper digestion and healing. Various health challenges may arise because chronic stress increases production of cortisol, the main stress hormone. Chronically elevated cortisol causes increased blood sugar and cholesterol, promotes the accumulation of abdominal fat, and may lead to muscle loss, weakened immune system, sleep issues and many weight challenges. Unfortunately, many people do not pay attention to this important lifestyle factor that is often the reason for many chronic health challenges and one of the most common reason, people visit health practitioners – weight gain.

We always feel happier by having an active social circle. Highly social people are the HAPPIEST. The social element can’t be removed from the evolution of the individual and it shouldn’t. Socializing plays a HUGE role in our physical and mental health; and subconsciously we know it and we crave it. Because it feels good. Face-to-face contact releases a whole cocktail of neurotransmitters and, like a vaccine, they boost our immunity and improve our brain health now, and well into the future. Simple things like chatting to a friend, spending time with your tribe, shaking hands, hugging, having a coffee with someone, giving somebody a high-five is enough to release oxytocin ( Love Hormone), which increases your level of trust, lowers your cortisol levels and therefore your stress. It is the best ‘Destress Emergency Pill’. As a result of social interaction, Dopamine ( Pleasure Neurotransmitter) is also generated, which gives us a little ‘high’, kills pain, almost like a naturally produced morphine. Try not to be alone when depressed or during the anxiety moments, even though solitude would be all we want at that very moment. The chemical cocktail of being social will help you to feel better. Being happier, mentally healthier, learning better, and living longer are all advantages that should motivate even the most dedicated Introverts to get out there and mingle. 3,000 years ago the Mayans were using cocoa and called it a “Gift from the gods”. Throughout history cocoa has been used and now there are many studies that are showing numerous health benefits!
One research study on cognition, blood pressure, and the metabolic profile aimed to see how cocoa flavanols consumption would affect elderly subjects. This was a double-blind, controlled, parallel-arm study conducted in 90 elderly individuals without clinical evidence of cognitive dysfunction who were randomly assigned to consume daily for 8 wk a drink containing 993 mg (high), 520 mg (intermediate), or 48 mg (low) cocoa flavanols.
The results displayed that there was a positive increase in cognition in all subject, but it was most significant in the participants that were taking the higher amount of cocoa flavanols. Also, there were significant improvements in blood pressure and insulin resistance in the participants that were taking higher and intermediate amounts of the cocoa flavanols.
For the regular consumer, it is important to make sure when buying cocoa, dark chocolate will contain more flavanols than milk chocolate and also find a product that has not been processed through the ‘Dutch’ method which strips a lot of the flavanols in the process.
