Remembering actress Joan Fontaine (1917-2013), who passed away 5 years ago today 😞🙏🏼💖. Born to British parents who were then living in Japan, Fontaine decided to pursue acting when she was still a teenager. Relocating to California with her mother and older sister, Olivia de Havilland (1916- ), she first joined a theatrical troupe before making her film debut in 1935. Her first major success came when she landed a supporting role in the classic film “The Women” (1939). The following year she starred in “Rebecca” (1940) for which she received an Academy Award nomination. Winning the award for “Suspicion” (1941), she would receive another nomination for “The Constant Nymph” (1943). Among her other major films are “Jane Eyre” (1943), “Ivy” (1947), and “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea” (1961). She also made numerous television appearances on programs like “Wagon Train”, “The Alfred Hitchcock Hour”, and “Hotel”. Fontaine was married and divorced 4 times. She had one biological daughter by her 2nd marriage. She also, at least partially, raised a Peruvian girl, Martita (1946- ?), but it is hard to separate fact from fiction in regards to the details of this “adoption” (I don’t believe the girl was ever actually adopted by Fontaine). Famously estranged from her older sister for decades, Joan Fontaine died in 2013 at the age of 96 😞🙏🏼💖. #joanfontaine #rip #gonebutnotforgotten #gonebutneverforgotten #oldhollywood #classichollywood #vintagehollywood #classicactress #vintageactress #oldhollywoodactress #classicbeauty #vintagebeauty #oldhollywoodbeauty #academyawardwinner

Another photograph of birthday girl Katherine MacDonald (1891-1956) 💖💖💖. This image is from my copy of “Blue Book of the Screen” published in 1923. I love to go through this book from time to time to read what was written about the stars of that day contemporarily (It’s in a fragile state, so I don’t reference it as often as I would like!). Reading here about MacDonald I learned she apparently was well known for wearing a “sailor hat and sport clothes” as she loved the outdoors. She also shied away from public eye, preferring to read quietly at home rather than attend parties. I don’t know why, but those little details are always the things that fascinate me. This book is now 95 years old...and every single person profiled within its pages has long passed away, with one notable exception. Baby Peggy (now known as Diana Serra Cary) (1918- ) is still alive, and I do hope well, at the age of 100. #katherinemacdonald #happybirthday #heavenlybirthday #happyheavenlybirthday #oldhollywood #classichollywood #vintagehollywood #silenthollywood #classicactress #vintageactress #oldhollywoodactress #silentactress #silentfilmactress #classicbeauty #vintagebeauty #oldhollywoodbeauty #silentbeauty #silentfilmbeauty #thebluebookofthescreen #1923

Remembering actress Neva Patterson (1920-2010), who passed away 8 years ago today 😞🙏🏼💖. A native of Iowa, she relocated to New York when she was 18. Deciding to pursue a career as an actress, she made her Broadway debut in 1947. As television made its way into homes, Patterson made frequent appearances in the new medium. Throughout the course of her career, she would appear in several of the various playhouse-style programs, as well as on series like “Ben Casey”, “The Patty Duke Show”, “Ironside”, “The Rockford Files”, “Maude”, “All in the Family”, “The Waltons”, “Dynasty”, and “Hotel”. Her film appearances were less frequent, but usually memorable. Among her movie credits are “Desk Set” (1957), “An Affair to Remember” (1957), “Too Much, Too Soon” (1958), and “David and Lisa” (1962). She retired from acting in the late 1980s. Patterson was married 3 times and divorced twice. She had 2 children. Neva Patterson passed away in 2010 after suffering complications related to a broken hip 😞🙏🏼💖. #nevapatterson #rip #gonebutnotforgotten #gonebutneverforgotten #oldhollywood #classichollywood #vintagehollywood #classicactress #vintageactress #oldhollywoodactress #classicbeauty #vintagebeauty #oldhollywoodbeauty
Remembering actress Jeanne Crain (1925-2003), who passed away 15 years ago today 😞🙏🏼💖. A native Californian, Crain was a natural beauty who was offered her first screen test while still in high school. She made her film debut in 1943 and would go on to appear in films like “State Fair” (1945), “Leave Her to Heaven” (1945), “Centennial Summer” (1946), “Margie” (1946), “A Letter to Three Wives” (1949), “Cheaper By the Dozen” (1950), “People Will Talk” (1951), “Belles on Their Toes” (1952), “Gentleman Marry Brunettes” (1955), “The Tattered Dress” (1957), and “Madison Avenue” (1961). She received a well-deserved Academy Award nomination for playing the title role in “Pinky” (1949), a drama about racial identity. I personally think she is often underrated...she was in so many fantastic films and was really good in them! A couple of my favorite films of all time, namely “Leave Her to Heaven” and “A Letter to Three Wives”, are among her credits 💖. Crain was married for over 50 years, although she and her husband were separated for several years before dying just 2 months apart in 2003. They had 7 children, though sadly 2 predeceased them 😞🙏🏼💖. Jeanne Crain passed away from a heart attack at the age of 78 😞🙏🏼💖. #jeannecrain #rip #gonebutnotforgotten #gonebutneverforgotten #oldhollywood #vintagehollywood #classichollywood #classicactress #vintageactress #oldhollywoodactress #classicbeauty #vintagebeauty #oldhollywoodbeauty #academyawardnominee
Remembering actress Myrna Loy (1905-1993), who passed away 25 years ago today 😞🙏🏼💖. Born in Montana, Loy moved to California as a child with her mother, following the death of her father. There, Loy initially focused on studying dance, and it was not long before she was appearing in local theatrical productions. Her unique beauty attracted the attention of film studios and she made her screen debut in 1925. She would go on to have a career that lasted well over 50 years and included over 135 movie and television roles. Just a few of her memorable film credits include “Thirteen Women” (1932), “When Ladies Meet” (1933), “Evelyn Prentice” (1934), “Wife vs. Secretary” (1936), “The Great Ziegfeld” (1936), “Libeled Lady” (1936), “The Best Years of Our Lives” (1946), “The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer” (1947), “Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House” (1948), “Cheaper By the Dozen” (1950), “Belles on Their Toes” (1952), “From the Terrace” (1960), and “Midnight Lace” (1960). She is probably best remembered for playing Nora Charles opposite William Powell (1892-1984) in the 6 “Thin Man” movies, including “The Thin Man” (1934), “Another Thin Man” (1939), and “Shadow of the Thin Man” (1941). Remarkably, given her long career and considerable talent, Loy never received an Academy Award nomination, though she did take home an honorary lifetime achievement award in 1991. She retired from acting in 1982. Married and divorced 4 times, she had no children. Myrna Loy passed away in 1993 at the age of 88 😞🙏🏼💖. #myrnaloy #rip #gonebutnotforgotten #gonebutneverforgotten #oldhollywood #classichollywood #vintagehollywood #classicactress #vintageactress #oldhollywoodactress #classicbeauty #vintagebeauty #oldhollywoodbeauty #theydontmakeemlikethatanymore
Remembering actress, singer, and dancer Lupe Velez (1908-1944), who passed away 74 years ago today 😞🙏🏼💖. Born in Mexico to a prominent family, Velez began to take an interest in dance while attending boarding school in Texas. After her family lost their financial stability in the Mexican Revolution, she returned home where she eventually started dancing in various stage productions. Making a name for herself as a performer in Mexico, she was ultimately recruited to Hollywood where she made her screen debut in 1927. Named a WAMPAS Baby Star of 1928, her screen credits would include films like “The Gaucho” (1927), “Stand and Deliver” (1928), “Tiger Rose” (1929), “Hot Pepper” (1933), “Gypsy Melody” (1936), “Stardust” (1938), and “Naná” (1944). Borrowing a nickname she had earned in the press for her fiery temper, she also starred in the “Mexican Spitfire” series of films from 1940-1943. Velez was married to swimming champion turned actor Johnny Weissmuller (1904-1984) from 1933-1939. She also had a number of high profile romances with actors like John Gilbert (1897-1936) and Gary Cooper (1901-1961). In the fall of 1944, she was involved with an actor named Harald Ramond (1916-1986) when she discovered she was pregnant. The couple quickly became engaged, but an argument that December led to a breakup. In an era when unwed pregnancy meant both personal and professional disaster, Velez apparently saw no way out of this predicament. On the evening of December 13, 1944, she had dinner with friends. In the early morning hours of December 14, with her hair perfectly coiffed, her makeup impeccably applied, and wearing her finest dress (or nightgown, accounts vary), she downed a bottle of Seconal pills and washed them down with a glass of brandy. Lupe Velez passed away shortly thereafter at just 36 years old 😞🙏🏼💖. #lupevelez #rip #gonetoosoon #gonebutnotforgotten #gonebutneverforgotten #oldhollywood #vintagehollywood #classichollywood #classicactress #vintageactress #latinaactress #oldhollywoodactress #classicbeauty #vintagebeauty #oldhollywoodbeauty #latinabeauty #themexicanspitfire #theydontmakeemlikethatanymore
Happy Heavenly Birthday to actress Lee Remick (1935-1991) 💖💖💖. Born in Massachusetts, Remick studied dance before focusing her attentions toward acting. After her Broadway debut in 1953, she quickly made her first television appearance that same year. Her introduction to the movies came in “A Face in the Crowd” (1957) and she followed that up with roles in films such as “The Long, Hot Summer” (1958), “Anatomy of a Murder” (1959), and “Baby the Rain Must Fall” (1965). She received an Academy Award nomination for her brilliant, heartbreaking role as Kirsten, a wife and mother descending into alcoholism, in “The Days of Wine and Roses” (1962). Remick continued working on stage, as well, earning a Tony Award nomination for her performance in the play “Wait Until Dark”. Though she never won, she also received 7 Emmy Award nominations for her work in various television miniseries and specials over the course of her career. Remick was married twice. Her first marriage, to director/producer Bill Colleran (1923-2000), produced 2 children before ending in divorce. She then married Kip Gowans (1930-2011), also a director/producer, which lasted until her death. Sadly, Remick passed away from kidney, lung, and liver cancer in 1991 at just 55 years old 😞🙏🏼💖. #leeremick #happybirthday #heavenlybirthday #happyheavenlybirthday #oldhollywood #vintagehollywood #classichollywood #classicactress #vintageactress #oldhollywoodactress #stageactress #classicbeauty #vintagebeauty #oldhollywoodbeauty #academyawardnominee #tonynominee #emmynominee
Happy Heavenly Birthday to actress, model, and fashion designer Elyse Knox (1917-2012) 💖💖💖. Born in Connecticut, Knox moved to New York as a young woman in order to study fashion. Strikingly beautiful, she modeled some of her designs in the pages of a major fashion magazine, where she was noticed by a movie talent scout. She made her screen debut in 1937 and went on to include films like “The Mummy’s Tomb” (1942), “Army Wives” (1944), and “Black Gold” (1947) on her resumé. After a brief first marriage ended in divorce, Knox married football star Tom Harmon (1919-1990) in 1944. Putting her fashion design skills to good use, Knox used the parachute Harmon had used to safely bail out of a doomed plane as the material for her wedding dress. The pair had 3 children, actress Kristin Harmon (1945-2018), who was married to Ricky Nelson (1940-1985) from 1963-1982, actress and interior designer Kelly Harmon (1948- ), and actor Mark Harmon (1951- ). Knox and Harmon remained married for over 45 years, until his death in 1990. Happy Heavenly Birthday to actress and producer Katherine MacDonald (1891-1956) 💖💖💖. A native of Pennsylvania, MacDonald eventually moved to New York where she began her career as a model. Interested in the idea of acting, she relocated to Hollywood and made her film debut in 1918. She had a relatively brief career, but made over 30 screen appearances over the next 8 years. Among her film credits are “The Beauty Market” (1919), “Passion’s Playground” (1920), “White Shoulders” (1922), “Money, Money, Money” (1923), and “The Unnamed Woman” (1925). In addition to acting, she also produced films in the early 1920s, becoming one of the first women to do so. She left her film career behind in the late 1920s, after which she worked in the cosmetics industry for several years. Married and divorced 3 times, she had 2 children. She was the older sister of actress Mary MacLaren (1896-1985), although the two apparently didn’t get along very well, often engaging in public feuds. MacDonald had been suffering from failing health for several years before passing away after suffering a stroke (as well as complications related to diabetes) in 1956 at the age of 64 😞🙏🏼💖. #katherinemacdonald #happybirthday #heavenlybirthday #happyheavenlybirthday #oldhollywood #vintagehollywood #classichollywood #silenthollywood #classicactress #vintageactress #oldhollywoodactress #silentactress #silentfilmactress #classicbeauty #vintagebeauty #oldhollywoodbeauty #silentbeauty #silentfilmbeauty #producer

Joan Crawford on the set of 'Trog' 1970. . I realized one morning that Trog was going to be my last picture. I had to be up early for the shoot and when I looked outside at the beautiful morning sky I felt that it was time to say goodbye. I think that may have been a prophetic thought because when I arrived on the set that morning the director told me that due to budget cuts we would wrap up filming today. The last shot of that film was a one-take and it was a very emotional moment for me. When I was walking up that hill towards the sunset I was flooded with memories of the last 50 years, and when the director yelled cut I just kept on walking. That for me was the perfect way to end my film career; however, the audiences who had to sit through that picture may feel differently. . ↪️#joancquote
