Cold Pursuit (2019)
Director: Hans Petter Moland
In the film industry it's fair to say that remakes are quite common. Whether it be of a major blockbuster franchise or a smaller film that gathered a cult following over the years. What isn't common is a director remaking his own film. Hitchcock did it with The Man Who Knew Too Much and now Hans Petter Moland has done it. This is a remake of the Swedish film In Order Of Disappearance starring Stellan Skarsgård.
The first film is supposed to be really good, I haven't seen it but it got me excited as in the future I can compare the two iterations. The trailer for Cold Pursuit was actually very surprising, a seemingly plain early in the year Liam Neeson action movie suddenly had potential to be something more. My expectations were unusually high, walking in I was hoping for a film such as Fargo mixed together with a revenge tale. I didn't quite get that.
I'll start with the aspects of the film that I enjoyed because there are alot of things which really worked. First of all when people die it comes up with a title card with their name, a really inventive way of not only showing death off screen, making it funny and also making it easy to understand when someone had bitten the dust. Performances across the board are also pretty good. Liam Neeson is I guess Liam Neeson, his beautiful voice was comforting and he seemed to enjoy himself in the role. Some of the emotional beats didn't quite work though, can't tell if that's from the acting or just the script but they felt very vacant. However the main villain played by Tom Bateman was so fucking wonderful I can't even. Unbelievably over the top it was hilarious to watch, that exuberant performance actually added a psychotic and unhinged edge to the character which was actually great to watch. The DP Philip Øgaard also did a really tidy job, though he was definitely assisted heavily by the beautiful landscapes which he captures very well.
