Building on from last week, this week’s Saturday stretch is all about stretching the adductor (inner thigh) and hamstring muscles. The adductors and hamstrings can tighten due to a number of reasons. 1. A sudden increase in training (e.g. running) or training on an uneven surface can cause the adductors to become overworked. 2. A lack of adductor stretching can cause the adductors to tighten and pull on the pelvis 3. A lack of hamstring stretching can cause the hamstrings to tighten which pulls the pelvis into a posterior tilt 4. If you avoid stretching or cool down post exercise you are increasing muscle tension which can tighten the adductors over time 5. If you have tight adductors and cross you legs, it can pull on your pelvis which can create lower back, knee or pelvic/groin pain To avoid this, we must keep active and stretch everyday. Today’s stretch should be done at least 2-3 times per day to decrease the risk of injury to our adductors and surrounding. For example, do 1 set in the morning before you get out of bed and 1 set in the evening before you go to sleep. Then you should try and fit 1 more set in throughout the day for the most optimal results. Watch the video below and follow the instructions to perform this stretch. Start in a sitting position and place your right leg straight out to the side. Bend your left knee so that your left foot is touching your right thigh. Then slowly lean forward with your hands to reach for your right foot. Hold for 30 seconds and then repeat 2 more times to equal the 1 set. Then stretch the other side. Start in a sitting position and place your left leg straight out to the side. Bend your right knee so that your right foot is touching your left thigh. Then slowly lean forward with your hands to reach for your left foot. Hold for 30 seconds and then repeat 2 more times to equal the 1 set. This week’s Saturday stretch is the progression from last week’s stretch on the glutes. It’s also known as the pigeon stretch. In today’s society we spend a lot of time sitting which causes an increase in muscle tension of the glutes. This becomes a problem because tight glutes can either put more pressure on our lower back or they press on our sciatic nerve and cause pain down the legs. We are more at risk of developing either of these conditions if our glutes are also weak. To avoid this, we must keep active and do a combination of stretching and strengthening everyday. Today’s stretch should be done at least 2 times per day to decrease the risk of injury. For example, do 1 set in the morning before you get out of bed and 1 set in the evening before you go to sleep for the most optimal results. Watch the video below and follow the instructions to perform this stretch. Start in a sitting position on the floor. Bend your left leg in front of you in a right angle position then try to straighten your right leg out behind you. Your hips should be level with the floor. For a bigger stretch in the glutes, try to lean your chest forward over your left thigh as far as you can. You should feel a stretch in your left glute. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds and then repeat twice more on the same side. Then switch sides. Start in a sitting position on the floor. Bend your right leg in front of you in a right angle position then try to straighten your left leg out behind you. Your hips should be level with the floor. For a bigger stretch in the glutes, try to lean your chest forward over your right thigh as far as you can. You should feel a stretch in your right glute. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds and then repeat twice more on the same side. If you aren’t feeling much of a stretch in your glutes when doing this stretch, watch out for next week’s Saturday stretch which will be harder.
