But let’s start at the beginning of my nutrition journey. My interest in nutrition began as a high school athlete (swimming, soccer, and cheerleading) where I realized how important nutrition was to performance and leading a healthy life. I chose to study nutrition at The Ohio State University where I received my Bachelor’s degreewith a minor in Exercise Science. I then completed my Dietetic Internship and Masters work at Bowling Green State University. I have spent 5+ years working in hospitals in both Ohio and North Carolina where I saw patients with cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and various other health issues and diseases. . Working with illness and injury always reminds me how important nutrition is for both recovery and prevention but I found that this focus is not limited to the sick or the hurt. It also applies for active individuals and everyday health. As you may remember my interest in nutrition started as a young athlete and this is where the story comes full circle. . While I am not an elite athlete I have always enjoyed staying active and encouraging others to do the same. I have been a gymnastics coach and a soccer coach and I started doing CrossFit about three years ago and fell in love with the workouts and the community. Last year I made a huge transition from the hospital to pursue a career as a Sports Dietitian and today I get to work in athletics full time. I now have experience with collegiate and professional athletes, Strongman competitors and CrossFit athletes of all levels. . Food is the fuel that runs the body. We wouldn’t knowingly put bad gasoline into our cars, and I believe we should be just as mindful when we choose foods to fuel our lives. In actual fact they contain the same amount of calories per gram as protein, and no one wants a low protein diet. The key here is calories. If you're someone that won't eat bread/a sandwich because you think it's 'bad' but will eat a protein ball in thinking it's 'good' the energy intake between the two may be the same. Another important reason in why you should have an understanding and regard for the caloric intake of your food choices is because some foods are deceiving in energy density such as the protein ball - so small, said to be a 'healthy snack' yet not exactly the choice where you'd be getting the most satiety for your calorie spend. No matter how 'healthy' you think something is your body will recognize & clock its caloric value. If you want to lose weight you need to calorically be consuming less energy than expenditure. Some foods are indeed more nutrient dense 🍌🍏🥕🥑 than others 🍫🍦🍬🍩 containing more micronutrients though THEY ALL HAVE CALORIES. If you're trying to lose weight it's necessary to be conscious of caloric intake given it is possible to over eat in protein balls just as it is possible to over eat in sandwiches.“ -
