I am waking to a new day, my brain is bubbling, thumping inside my skull. With over #6concussions
, I have been studying pain since I was 7YO.
I am #Over55YO
now and I have my stories compiled into my hashtags so that everyone can follow #MyHealingJournal
Especially my caretakers in the future when I cannot think any more and I won’t be able to walk...#BrokenBack
falling off #GrandCanyon1992
What is my best learning from all this, I am my own psychic surgeon of my own plasmic body. I call for help and it receives the answers. I am a receiver of healing. I am my own healer. Watch me.
Today is National Concussion Awareness Day! 70-90% of concussions are symptom-free at 7 days. What factors increase the chance of prolonged recovery from concussion? Simply put- nobody is entirely sure. Many studies show conflicting evidence. For example, some claim loss of consciousness or adolescence is predictive of prolonged recovery, and others completely reject that. Genetics is often agreed upon to play a huge role, but this area is largely not yet understood. A few factors that are generally agreed upon: female sex, history of additional concussions, ApoE4 genotype mutation, migraine or amnesia at time of accident, and the injury occurring in the last two weeks of a woman’s menstrual cycle. No matter what factors led you to a prolonged recovery, it is important not to just accept the term “post-concussion syndrome” as your forever diagnosis. PCS is an umbrella term. Effective treatments can be found when you break down this term into specific symptoms to see which systems (vestibular, cognition, mental health, physiological, etc.) need to be treated.
Also, shoutout to my girl @misswinnipesaukee
for establishing this as an official day! 🧠💪🏼
