Five years ago today on December 13, 2013, @beyonce
shocked the world by releasing her surprise self titled fifth studio album. It was exclusively on iTunes and released in physical format a week later. Her first album since 4 was revealed in 2011, it was released via Parkwood Entertainment and @columbiarecords.
It was developed as a visual album, which all 14 songs on the album were accompanied with a video. Each visual illustrated the musical concepts conceived during creation of Bey's self titled album. The subject matter is described as dark and intimate including feminist themes of sexuality, monogamous love and challenges faced in a relationship. It was inspired by Bey's desire to assert her full creative freedom. Musically, her self titled fifth album featured elements of alternative R&B, Soul, Hip Hop and Electronic Music. The album was Bey's fifth consecutive #1
and reached multi-platinum status. It produced four hit singles, which were XO, Drunk in Love, Partition and Pretty Hurts. Bey's Self Titled album featured production from @timbaland
and several others. The features on the album were #JAYZ
, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, @blonded
and Blue Ivy. Bey's self titled fifth album is considered one of Yonce's best albums and one of the greatest albums released this decade. She really brought back the importance of investing your time into albums as oppose to the single and the hype. Albums still matter as well as the great music it carries. Such a genius body of work that'll continue to age well as time passes. Much love to Queen Bey.
