Louis Kahn - Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad (1962-1974) ⚫️🙏🏻
Posthumously completed, this is surely one of Kahn’s seminal projects, managing to locate an identifiably Indian vernacular in a simple yet monolithic brick built form.
Impenetrable and fortress-like upon first encounter, the campus appears as a confusing puzzle of brick pavilions and podiums, before gradually revealing its vistas, ramps and plazas the longer one spends turning corners.
The shallow brick arches and his signature circular apertures provide casual space for quiet contemplation or for students and educators to gather informally, outside the confines of a lecture room - how pleasing it was to see al-fresco lessons happening all over the campus, the building functioning exactly as intended in this respect.
Meanwhile the airy colonnades and windowless openings provide natural ventilation during the oppressively hot summer months, and artificial lighting is kept to a minimum, with the transition between bright and shaded areas seeming very natural. Interior spaces are functional and spartan, the sole concession to a dramatic gesture being the large oculus window in the expansively proportioned library space. It seems a building that’s as much about what happens outside its walls as what does within them.
