Yesterday I got a fb notification that it has been 9 years since I became friends with my coach @manxinhabjj
- which means 9 years since I stepped into @londonfightfactory
and began my jiu-jitsu journey 😱
I didn’t immediately get on with the sport, I was dragged there by my ex and I felt embarrassed trying to do forward rolls, and petrified at having to spar. I trained for a couple months and then broke my foot (yes, whilst training) and didn’t step on the mats for about 10 months.
I moved to Nottingham to study for an MA and decided to start bjj again (from what felt like scratch) at @bigfootbjjbkk
Lee’s old academy Bushido - it’s around this time that I sent the text in the second photo about ‘remembering the moves’ haha still true!
A year later I was back in London and back at @londonfightfactory
and ready to start competing. My first comp was The Abu Dharbi Pro Trials - I did not realise that it was white & blue belts mixed division 😳 but happily managed to get bronze after getting flying arm barred by @vanessaenglishbjj
My second comp was the 2012 British Open (pictured) & I received my blue belt shortly after.
Looking at the photo, I recognise @sonya_marie_3
🙋🏼♀️ but I wonder if these other women are still training... crazy to think next year will be a decade since I began & that I now have my own students @newwaveacademymma
Here’s to another 9! 🍻
