First Blood (1982) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Following the success of the first three Rocky films, Sylvester Stallone embarked on a much different project as the Vietnam war veteran John Rambo in First Blood. One of the first films to be such an open critique against the controversial war and against local US police forces, First Blood tells the story of a drifter who is pushed to the edge by the sheriff of a small town in Northern US. It’s a pretty straightforward narrative that takes its protagonist from an outside battle and puts him in the jungle of his own country, forced to stand up to his rights by any means necessary. Walking that fine line between dangerous, ruthless killer and soldier suffering heavily of PTSD, Stallone gives one of his best ever performances, and it’s clear he had a lot of passion for this project. Accompanied by an emotional and in the same time thrilling score by Jerry Goldsmith, one of his best I might add, First Blood is still relevant to this day. Much more intimate, gritty and with plenty of social messages, this is a wonderful action movie and a stellar first entry in a series that’s gonna heavily switch gears with the next few movies.
