I remember driving home from the desert after this photoshoot and being SO stoked about it! The whole drive home I kept thinking this is exactly what I want to be doing!
Creatives/entrepreneurs tend to feel discouraged and I know I get like that a lot. Sometimes I get frustrated when things don't work out, when a blogger shoots with someone else instead of me or when it just gets tough. I constantly have to remind myself of that stoked feeling because the more I strive for what I ultimately want, the harder it sometimes gets. Hope this encourages somebody today!❣ -

Many many times I've been asked about how it all began (photography...). Whenever I hear that question I kind of freeze because if I'm being honest, I have NO clue.
I remember living in Michigan and picking up my phone to capture some photos, but it never was a thought of mine to be a "photographer". I also remember going to a @socality
event in Ohio with two friends (@kendallborel
) + picking up Kendall's camera and thinking, "wow I kinda have an eye for this".
Fast forward to California. Yup, the land of lost dreams...or finding them..You choose. I personally found them. Living here in a state of artists who are working their asses off to "make it", well it's inspiring and spirit lifting (if you choose to see it that way #perspective
. I started getting more drawn towards photography but there was a constant doubt of, "how will I be different than the next photographer". But I'll save that for a different post.
Nov. 2017 my sister was living with me and her being the younger more responsible one she helped me invest in buying my FIRST camera. A Canon 6D with a 50mm 1.4 lens. From Nov to now I've been working my butt off to improve. I'm a 100% self taught manual photographer!
Moral of this long post/story. IF God has a will, HE has a way. Maybe you're not meant to be a Photographer. But your heart has been pulling you towards SOMETHING. Lean into that something and go after it. What do you have to lose? The answer is NOTHING.

The irony is not lost on me. I taught myself photography by shooting for my food blog back in the day. I thought that because I didn’t have people to photograph, I could cook and style food and be in control of the entire process that way - light, props, subject, content. One night I saw Seventeen was looking for a health blogger, so I changed everything around, made my blog health-oriented, pitched it to them, and got the gig! After that it was a lot of pictures of oatmeal. Pumpkin spice oatmeal, roasted banana honey, carrot cake, blueberry, quinoa, steel cut, rolled - you name it, I’ve made it, and photographed it.
One of my jobs is to take a LOT of food photos in lifestyle settings. And I love it so much. I can’t help but laugh at ALL that was in between this photo and my first snap of oats.
A science degree, working at physical therapy clinics, marriage, starting BECKLEY, photographing weddings, being an Instagram husband. And I love all of these things too! But food holds a special place in my heart (doesn’t it for all of us?)
